My cycling shorts are worn out and I never loved them to begin with, they were just okay. What are your favorite shorts for long rides? I'm in IM training now, so the more comfy the better.

My wife prefers her Desoto 400 mile shorts.

I lovelovelove the Assos S5 shorts. I find that the men's shorts provide better coverage than the women's, but it's like I'm not even wearing shorts yet am fully protected.

They're expensive, but can usually be found on sale for significantly less.

If you want a tri cycling short, De Soto 400-mile are pretty amazing.

For seriously cheap shorts that are super comfy and can still go the distance in training, Funkier have worked well for me up to the half distance.

Over the years I've had several pairs of Pearl Izumi shorts (various models, we have an outlet store near my hometown in Oregon so I can get good deals on them) and I've always been happy with them. Durable and comfortable. I prefer my trishorts for longer rides if I'm mostly in aero (i.e. trainer here or bike trail in Oregon) but the bike shorts aren't bad for that, either. By contrast, I have never had a good experiwnce with Pearl Izumi tri shorts or suits. They don't seem to fit right and the pad is badly placed. Have only had good luck with Zoot and 2XU for those. I don't do IM training but have worn both the Pearl Izumi and Zoot shorts for several 80+ miles rides and multi-day bike tours with 4-6 hours of riding a day.

I love my DeSoto Forza Riviera tri shorts -- I don't even know how many pairs I have now!

Another fan of Desoto Forza, but I think mine are the model prior to the current ones on their website. Love them!

I actually have switched to wearing tri shorts for my last ironman. I wore Coeur shorts and I love them.

I mostly wear tri shorts and I rotate brands so no one place becomes chaffed.  I have only worn cycling shorts on the trainer but I ride the trainer a LOT.  It just makes training possible with a busy life.  I like Desoto, Oomph and skins the best

Pearl Izumi Sugar shorts. Hands-down my favorites. I have 6-8 pairs. I have a few other brands, giordana, hincapie, a couple others...but these are by far the most comfortable, best-fitting, and long-lasting (some are 10 years old, so I'd say they are pretty durable). It also helps that they are relatively inexpensive ($55-60 bucks but you can find them for $25-35 on closeout quite often).

I'm seconding Coeur. Completely seamless chamois, 3 pockets in the back, comfortable waist band, and cool patterns. Coming out with their 2015 line soon and some of them look pretty nice!

I've worn SOAS tri shorts since I got into tris last year. Great designs. I did have to put a drawstring into them as I am apparently a bit more curvy than their design accounted for. Don't want to sunburn back there.
