Pre-race routine:

Stay inside until just before the start.

Comments:

5 laps around the Monroe Community College campus. One half mile hill into the wind each lap, but not terribly steep so no big deal. Heading into the wind each lap I would pull the mask up over my face and take it down to breath a bit easier when the wind was at my back.
After the first lap I ran with the same group of people for most of the rest of the race.
Nutrition strategy was a gel before the race and one at lap 2 and 4 just before the aid station.
No real expectations as this was the longest run since the fall and I was just using it to log some outside miles. Plus they made it the first race of the 4 season challenge of 4 HM through out the year, I was planning on doing at least 2 of the other races so I figured the discount was worth adding this one.

Did I mention I hate the cold?

But, its done and although not even close to a PR, Im not disappointed from where my conditioning currently is.
What would you do differently?:

Find a race in a warmer climate
Post race
Warm down:

Since the last 2 laps were in the dark and the temperature was near zero, no problem cooling down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

2 races, one day.

Event comments:

First year for this race and I think the participation was higher than they expected, but they still handled it well.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
