I am staying at the Westin on the beach for a week in Feb for business. Would I want to swim off the beach for training? The water temp is showing 75 so that doesn't seem to be a problem. I've never been to Ft. Lauderdale but typically in Fl I don't think of surf being a big deal unless there is a storm.

I'm a strong swimmer and a pretty experienced open water swimmer, although I will say that rightly or wrongly sharks are always int he back of my mind.

I grew up swimming at ft lauderdale beach and still do it when I'm in the area. I usually see others doing the same . I don't think you'll have any issues with it.

Definitely ok to swim...if you go solo - be sure you swim with guards around, obviously.  If you feel like driving, the Boca Raton Triathletes are often holding informal swims with members posting on Facebook esp on sat and sun mornings.  If sharks are around, they will post that on the board under "Sea Pests" haha...and likely won't allow you to swim.

Excellent. Thanks to you both. Unfortunately I won't be there on the weekend to take you up on the Boca Raton club swim. But I look forward to getting out of the pool and into the ocean for a few swims while I'm down there.

Stroke after stroke, my pace was pulling me out into the middle of the lake quickly. The cover seemed to be getting thicker. But still in the distance, the little boathouse was my lighthouse.

Some are getting a little OWS practice in, others are strategizing, the rest are just plain scared.
