No one else wants to guess so I will take a wild stab at it and say 3:41:27 as long as you promise not to go tempo'ing.  If you do, 4:12:39!

I'd need more info on what the rest of her weekly mileage looks like (I can't seem to figure out how to view the training log). If it's 5k max on all the other days I'm saying 3:52 as the wheels fall off, but hopefully not.

OK. I promise I won't go tempoing and I will stick with the 3:45 pace team as long as I can, and if I have anything extra at mile 22 I'll try to kick. At least it will give everyone an idea about Daniels plan minus a few miles each week. I don't think I was too short on miles...but maybe! I guess I should have logged them all!

Drum roll please.....3:48. Wah wah wah waaaaaah!!!

OK - new question. So I paced perfectly for 26.2. Right at 3:45. But the course was 26.5, which I know is still certified, blah blah blah. But...does it make a big difference if you really take the corners and turns well - in terms of cutting off extra distance in a marathon? I had no idea what the course looked like going in, but would that have maybe cut my mileage a bit? Maybe an extra .2 miles or something?

I always count in an extra .5 miles in for a marathon due to not taking tangents (impossible at the start with crowds) and also with GPS being off sometimes. Sucks but it's a lesson I learned. Even on my stable runs, 3 laps around a lake is exactly 13.1 for me but sometimes it's short and sometimes it's over by .2-.3 even though it's all on a trail. I doubt I ran less or more but just GPS signal lost or interference sometimes.

And to answer your question: yes taking the tangents does add up but if they are extreme I sometimes do gradual to make it easier on me knees. Rainmaker has a good article about this: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2009/03/racing-line-understanding-how-co...

That's awesome! Congratulations.

Glad the even pacing worked for you.

Garmin error is standardly about 1% given the way it measures and running tangents. So I always figure that into my pacing. 3 minutes over 3:48 is just over 1%, so that's actually pretty good. In fact, if a course measured right on 26.2 I would guess that somewhere GPS signal was lost and you'd have a "short" mile in there.

Thank you! A bit disappointed about not getting my BQ, but I'm almost there - maybe next time!

It's so difficult to pace during a marathon with a garmin, since I was trying to stay right at 8:35 min/mile, which I did pretty well. The pace group ended up leaving in the corral ahead of me, so I was over a minute behind them when I started, and then I guess my pacing was too slow for the course. Oh well - live and learn!

Congrats on your race.  You did a great job.

On the distance, I'd be a bit disappointed especially if it was with a BQ so close at hand.  While I think you can shave a bit off running the tangents and it is wise to do I can't imagine you would gain (or lose) more than a tenth or so.  Even in a huge event I think you can drift through the crowd to not overly waste time.  What is also frustrating is when your Garmin is right on the mile markers on the course until that last one.

pops...no doubt. i ran a marathon and markers were right on...until mile 20+....they were magically 1/10 of a mile longer then. Wah!

BQ is just another arbitrary number. You got a PR! Whoo hoo!

Yes, the course is measured like any other certified course. If your not taking the tangents, over 26.2, its going to make a difference.

Thank you! You must be right because I was surprisingly not too upset about missing the BQ - I was too excited about the PR!

I've actually done what you suggest and I failed miserably. Also, it must be said that I was sick the week prior to the marathon so that's also part of the reason why I wasn't able to finish the race. I gave up at kilometer 30. I had done 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 tempos in training where you run a warm-up, then a 5 mile tempo, 1 mile easy, 4 mile tempo, 1 mile easy, etc. So I tried that strategy in the race but I felt that I was off from the get-go and was practically walking at mile 18 so I just gave up rather than walk the remaining 10k since I had a time goal and finishing the race was not a goal. Also, I couldn't do my last long run 3 weeks out so I did it 2 weeks out and I might not have recovered on time. My long run was 39K...

This wonderful thread got me thinking (as I get fatter w/less activity during the winter) whether there's an average finishing time. The article below summed the stats of 2013 Chicago, New York, & MCM. Average finish time: 4:33. I think your time is awesome.

How'd you like turning around on the lakefront to run into a wall of wind for 3 miles?

I PR'ed Sunday as well... 3:38.  Next year my BQ time drops to 3:25 and I have a friend who said he'd be glad to come down to pace me to make a run for it.  I'm considering it.

Yes - the wind was insane. I knew the minute I turned around into it my BQ goal was gone. I was wondering why I felt so great heading out to the lake though
