I haven't done a time trial in a couple of months and did a 1,500 meter TT this morning. Last one I did I swam a 22 and change, but had made some pretty good strides since then (or so I thought). I had my myself pretty well convinced that I could go sub 20 minutes. I ended up at 20:50. I'm kind of bummed about it now. I paced it terribly (the clocks weren't set up in the pool so I had to swim blind) but even if I had paced better, I was way too far off to hit the mark. Man, I thought I had that one in the bag. Oh well, back to work I suppose. At least it ignited a bit of a fire again, I hate being disappointed like that.

Are you 100% sure you counted properly?  Just one extra 50 gets you down to 20:10.

I dropped quite a bit of time off my 1500 simply by pacing better.

I'm pretty sure but I'll know for certain when I download it from my watch later. I'd like to see how my pacing changed too. The coach there timed me and said I started out the first 300 at 1:16/100meter which would explain my crash.

Yeah, that's enough to kill your chances.  First one I did I went out similar, 1:16/17 for the first bit, by the end I was doing 1:25s and hurting bad.  Next time I started out right on 1:20s and just held it by slowly increasing my effort.  20:00.7 (doh!)

Heck, if you're doing 1:16/100M you are a superhero in my book.

Decent result. But seriously you need a tempo trainer and more speed work.

It sounds fast for triathletes, however most kids on a swim team over the age of 12 are swimming that fast.

yep but some of us are busting a gut to get 2:16/100m, it's all relative.

I agree that a 20:50 1,500 SCM wouldn't be a very competitive time for a high school senior male, but I wouldn't go quite as far as to say "most kids on a swim team over the age of 12 are swimming that fast". Case in point...

http://www.usaswimming.org/_Rainbow/Documents/247b781e-ec16-406d-bc...

A 20:50 1,500 would put a 12 y/o female and a male at almost a AAA level, so not "most" but actually very very few. Now, looking at 17-18 y/o males and a 20:50 is a BB, which is still in the ranks, but not uber competitive by any stretch. Of course, I'm 36 and only have been back in the pool 8 months after almost 20 years on dry land (and previous to that, I was a moderate high school swimmer at best) so cut me some slack.

Slight correction, after looking again I realized I was looking at the wrong table. The 11-12 y/o times for both male and female would be between A and AA, still excluding "most". For 17-18 y/o males it would be in the middle between B and BB.

I wish but I did live "inland" for a good portion of my childhood. We saw water for 2 weeks of the year, when they threw us in and said swim (yes literally that is what my swim teacher did). Freezing, cold, blowing a gale on the south coast. I used to turn blue.

I am getting better though and am now at 1:50/100 and if I was a bit more consistent with training could get down a fair bit more I think, thanks to Sheila. Can't recommend her stuff enough. It has made a huge improvement for me.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.
