1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: Sub 20 1,500 still eludes me I haven't done a time trial in a couple of months and did a 1,500 meter TT this morning. Last one I did I swam a 22 and change, but had made some pretty good strides since then (or so I thought). I had my myself pretty well convinced that I could go sub 20 minutes. I ended up at 20:50. I'm kind of bummed about it now. I paced it terribly (the clocks weren't set up in the pool so I had to swim blind) but even if I had paced better, I was way too far off to hit the mark. Man, I thought I had that one in the bag. Oh well, back to work I suppose. At least it ignited a bit of a fire again, I hate being disappointed like that. |

The coach there timed me and said I started out the first 300 at 1:16/100meter which would explain my crash. |

First one I did I went out similar, 1:16/17 for the first bit, by the end I was doing 1:25s and hurting bad. Next time I started out right on 1:20s and just held it by slowly increasing my effort. 20:00.7 (doh!)

I agree that a 20:50 1,500 SCM wouldn't be a very competitive time for a high school senior male, but I wouldn't go quite as far as to say "most kids on a swim team over the age of 12 are swimming that fast". Case in point... http://www.usaswimming.org/_Rainbow/Documents/247b781e-ec16-406d-bc... A 20:50 1,500 would put a 12 y/o female and a male at almost a AAA level, so not "most" but actually very very few. Now, looking at 17-18 y/o males and a 20:50 is a BB, which is still in the ranks, but not uber competitive by any stretch. Of course, I'm 36 and only have been back in the pool 8 months after almost 20 years on dry land (and previous to that, I was a moderate high school swimmer at best) so cut me some slack. |

Slight correction, after looking again I realized I was looking at the wrong table. The 11-12 y/o times for both male and female would be between A and AA, still excluding "most". For 17-18 y/o males it would be in the middle between B and BB. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Sub 20 1,500 still eludes me Originally posted by simpsonbo I wish but I did live "inland" for a good portion of my childhood. We saw water for 2 weeks of the year, when they threw us in and said swim (yes literally that is what my swim teacher did). Freezing, cold, blowing a gale on the south coast. I used to turn blue. I thought you Aussies all swam 1.20/100 out of the womb. I am getting better though and am now at 1:50/100 and if I was a bit more consistent with training could get down a fair bit more I think, thanks to Sheila. Can't recommend her stuff enough. It has made a huge improvement for me. |
