Subject: Tracking App during IM?
Just wondering if anyone knows of a good tracking app that can be used during a IM? I am thinking there's probably something out there that will let me carry my phone and have my family be able to track where I am at on the course?? Anyone use something like this??

Yup, no phones allowed on the course. Your family can check the race website and see when you pass certain checkpoints, that is the only option.

My friend wore some kind of gps tracking device and I used an app to track her with it. It was about the size of a lipstick container and fit on her race belt. Although since carrying a phone is against the rules, I have a feeling that may have been against the rules too.  And sadly I can't for the life of me remember what it was called either.

Editing to add:   This was probably it:  http://www.myathletelive.com/

I used myathletelive.com for IMFL.  It worked great.  It's legal too.  It's just a GPS device.  It uses cell towers and I hear that some places with crappy cell service makes it useless.

920xt has the live tracking that pushes to your phone (that you "can't" have) and your phone pushes to Garmin site.

If it's a WTC race, then your family can get the Irontrac app on their phones, where splits are updated periodically. Most non-branded races have online tracking, and you can access that from internet on your phone as well.

I have a RoadID app on my phone that I use for training.  It provides near-real-time updates on my position and will send a "distress signal" if I stop moving for 5 minutes.

You'd have to check whether it is allowable to have your phone during the race.

We use Irontrac as well.  Always seem to be behind and nobody knows where those mats are in relation to the course. Myathelte was perfect for real time tracking.  My in-laws are in their 70s.  They wanted to see me coming and going in the transition area; however, could not stand around waiting on me.  With the app, they were able to get ETAs and didn't have to wait but a couple of minutes.

Many of the apps like irontrac simply use the results from the ironman site so if there's a delay on there end there will be a delay on those apps as well.  I know this first hand because I was one of the first to right an app to do this and it was a PITA to up keep.  myathletelive is great as long as there is adequate mobile network access so it can send your position to their servers.  If I ever do another iron distance race I would probably just use my SPOT Gen3 that I use for hiking, camping, etc. It might be on the bulky side but it would work for what I need.

Yup.....I used myathletetelive.com for IMWI in 2013 and it worked great. My friends, family, and coach really liked how they could find me on the course. I ran into them several times and it was a great boost. Highly recommend and the price was decent.

i just got an email from them saying they are updating the results reporting again it it would "break" all the apps. Anyone using one should make sure that it's an app the developers keep updated often, and none of them seem to be sanctioned/endorsed by IM.

I've got a GTU-10 I don't use any more. I'll be more than happy to sell it for ... $75 shipped if you're interested.

Might want to mention the annual fee to activate it too.

I use one of these and it works fairly well for the most part.  For longer races it lets my wife know exactly where I am and she doesn't have to stand around for hours wondering.  We take it on training rides/runs too.

I used myathletelive.com for IMCDA a couple of years ago and plan on using it again this year.  For $30, you can't beat it.  My family and friends were able to go do stuff and then come back to the course when I was coming through.  Also had tons of friends and family tracking me from home all over the country.

Thanks for all the help! I'm either going to a) trying to make my own (fun project lol) or b) give up on that and try myathlete!

Provided one was proficient in setting up the different functions of the Lap Track, I think that a short-course triathlete would benefit most from this, since it only records splits up to 50 laps.

One way to improve your speed is to do track work that totals the time and distance goal. The idea is to slowly condition your body to be comfortable at your goal pace.
