Just upgraded my beater commuter into a road bike. Also get to use it for training in the city or in crappy weather. During the week though, due mainly to schedule, my rides are on the trainer on my tri bike. I have a PowerTap (currently on my Tri Bike). The question is: which bike should I leave the PM on?
Road Bike: (short) Commutes, Weekend long rides, or...
Tri Bike: During-week trainer rides?

I use TrainerRoad on the Trainer, so I guess I could use Virtual Power for the trainer rides...

I'd have it on the bike you'll race on, but that's just me :p

Why not both? Thats the beauty of a powertap, easy to switch!

Another vote for both.  Maybe not for the short weekday commutes but long weekend rides, absolutely.

What trainer do you have? Kurt Kinetic has a power meter for their trainer:

I always found having a trainer tire made it a PITA to move from the trainer to road.

This has been my main issue, but I don't have a power meter, just a dedicated trainer wheel plus trainer road

I have a CT so forgot about that part, but I know folks that use the same tire and swap for races

Buy a second power meter

Wow. When I read the title, my first thought was: "go with a powertap!"

So to echo everyone else, just swap it out. It takes less than a minute. You don't need a special trainer tire if that is what is holding you back. Having power on every ride is way more beneficial than having a slightly quieter trainer ride that lasts a little longer.

Thanks all for the feedback. I thought about just hot swapping the wheel between the two bikes, but I would have to get them both dialed in for that wheel, correct (e.g., adjusting the rear derailleurs)? And just leave the regular road tire on?

Yup. It's not terrible to use a road tire on the trainer. Myself (and many others) do it all the time.
