I'm doing it...did it last year and other than the fog-delayed start, it was great. Last year after the fog lifted it was a perfect day for it--apparently in years past it's been cold and rainy, which for me is pretty hard to get fired up about!

I have to decide really soon. I work in Carillon Point so I would love to do the race but I'm considering doing the Black Diamond Olympic the following weekend. If I don't participate in the Kirkland Tri and plan on volunteering to help out.

How is the Kirkland Tri?
Has anyone done the Black Diamond before? Is it a large race?

Hey Novo--

I work at Carillon Point too--we should meet some time! And I also am considering Black Diamond--I'm already signed up for Kirkland, and might do the Olympic tri the following weekend just for the hell of it, and probably based on a last-minute weather judgement--if it's cold and nasty it'll be hard for me to get fired up about it. I've only ever done sprints, so doing the Olympic would be just to see how it goes to do longer distances. Did Kirkland last year and it was great, a bit hilly on the bike but decent.

Where do you work at Carillon? I'm at the far end by the parking. I work for Rotella Capital, we're on the second floor, we're just a small little company, I don't even think we have a sign anywhere. Are there any good swimming spots in Kirkland? I usually head to Madison Park but it would be nice to sneak out of the office some day.

I've slacked all summer so I'm going to try to kick my own but in September. I plan on doing Kirkland now and I'm going wait and see on Black Diamond. I'm not sure if I'm up for an Olympic but it would be the kick in the but I need. We have an IronMan finisher in my office and an IronWoman in training. I'm going to see if I can talk them into doing Kirkland.

I work at the salon next to the hotel (not the spa). Regarding swimming nearby, I often swim at the first "beach" south of Kirkland, don't know the name but there's a dock out into the water and condos that go out over the water on either end of the park, so I just swim between the condo buildings and it's fairly protected from boat traffic. Also, Idylwood park on Lake Sammamish is a popular one for tri swimmers, but go before 11:00AM or so or the lifeguards won't let you swim out away from the roped off area. I think Meydenbauer park also has roped off swim lanes and it's more protected from wind and wave action, so pretty good in the evenings.

Latest weather forcast says partly cloudy on Sunday. Hopefully the rains will hold out on race day.

How is the transition area at Kirkland? Do you plan on dropping off your bike on Saturday or taking care of everything Sunday morning?

Good luck to everyone. Be safe and have fun.

Someday I'm gonna come home to Kirkland from Texas and participate. I love swimming in Lake Washington. When I'm home, I swim at Denny Park, but the milfoil sucks.

this is an old thread but ill revive it!

this will be my first triathlon.
i am very excited.
i bought my bike about 2 weeks ago and have ridden it every day. as of monday ive started running 2 miles every nite and in a week or so, ill join the YMCA so i can get a few days a week in the pool.
im a large boy and this will be the best way for me to not only extend my life expectancy but also to shed about 40lbs!

anyhow, if anyone is doing this sprint tri let me know! ill wave at you as you pass me

I am going to do the Kirkland sprint tri, too. It will be my third one this summer, third one ever. I swim in Lake Sammamish although haven't done nearly enough yet. Nice to see the warmer weather. I did a mini-tri/brick this morning which was fun. This sport is so addictive!

I'll be there. I've done this the last two years. Fun event. Lots of waves (wave start, not waves on the lake), and a REALLY hilly bike leg. There's really only one place where it gets dicey at all -- steep downhill, hard transition to flat at the bottom going over a pedestrian bridge, and then an off-camber left coming off it. Traffic control is top-notch (they even have cops at the busier driveways along the course). At the beginnig of the bike leg, you're on the left side of the road for the first couple miles, which feels strange. People don't know which side to pass on, so it becomes a bit of a free-for-all.

The run is pretty flat (slight uphill at the start, which you come back down at the end). A narrow part in a condo complex (on a paved trail).

Two years ago they had to hold the start for a half-hour for teh fog to lift (coast guard requirement). They were afraid that some one could swim off-course and not be seen.

I'll be there too. I signed up to convince a friend to sign up. If all goes well it'll be my second tri of the summer (ok, ever).

Howdy y'all,

I'll be doing this one for the third time this year. I think this is a very well-organized, laid out race (given that I've only done five triathlons in my life!) Yes, the ride is a bit hilly, but not, IMHO, too bad. Just plan on a couple of decent ups in the first half of the ride. Okay, they can be a bit steep. Other than that, it's been great.

See you there!

I'm going to do the Flowing Lake tri instead of Kirkland, even though it's farther away (and it's the day before -- yeah, in another state of fitness I'd do both). Will probably end up costing about the same overall though (farther/lower entry fee vs. closer/higher entry fee).

Can I ask why you decided this?  I had F.L. recommended to me yesterday.....trying to figure out what to do that weekend.... Subaru vs Mercer Island vs Flowing Lake...

Hi all,
I have only done one sprint tri so far but like a few others of you, I am hooked on this tri thing. Now I am trying to decide if it would be a good idea to do the Kirkland tri and then the Black Diamond or just finish off the season with one more race (Probably the Black Diamond). Thoughts??

Kinda of a stupid question for ya???? What is holding you back on doing both?? Cost? Travel? Too close to Black Diamond time wise? If you are really hooked and none of the above are a concern then I say go for it. We have a LONG WINTER, and it will be a while until you race again after Black Diamond.

Kirkland is a great race, well organized, and fun... However it is pretty expensive, and REALLY CROWDED... The only other kicker that I have noticed.... You never know what kind of weather you will be getting at this race...

Just my 2cents. But I say GO FOR IT!

Thanks for the input. Good points and it is definetely mostly the time input of having to trek down for two weekends of staying in hotels with my husband and two year old versus only asking for one weekend.
I am also not really sure of what training to do between tris that close. I have read you can just cut off the last two weeks of a training plan and repeat that? Has that worked well for any of you?

It should be relatively easy training.. Light jog, easy spin, etc... However you will probably not increase your "fitness level" in those 2 weeks, so just take it easy and get the blood pumping...

Good luck.. Hope this helps a little.
