Subject: Trainer Set-Up
I have been on my cyclops mag trainer for the last month or so. I am worried that I don't have it set up correctly.

My main concern is repeatability in set up. I would like to take my bike off the trainer on nice days but still take advantage of trainer road and virtual power.

Any how. The trainer doesn't seem to offer resistance anywhere near the road.

How tight should the flywheel be against the tire? Does that have a big influence on resistance?

I can get on the biggest gear 53/12 (ish) and keep my cadence in the 95-100ish range. I can't even come close to the on the road. (with a tailwind)

some good videos on youtube about this. I use TR as well. I think for virtual power they recommend making sure air pressure is same and try to tighten down on flywheel about same each time. I've heard of people marking their turn knob so they can set to same resistance each time.

Not sure about mags but my CycleOps Jet Fluid Pro makes a dimple in my wheel.  I can repeat the same setup over and over.  Pump wheel to 100, touch the flywheel on the wheel, lift the lever and turn it.  The turn on the lever makes a big dimple.

Do you reset your trainer each time or just lift the cam lever or whatever that's called.  I believe I have the same or similar cycleops and I just pump tires and lift lever.  I kind of thought that was the point of it.

I don't do any reset.  Really not sure what that process is. LOL.  Pump, turn, lift, lock and spin.

This is pretty much my experience though I have a cycleops fluid too.  If you just release the cam lever (without turning it) the only other variable to resistance is tire pressure.

Ha, neither am I.   That's what I can't figure out unless they are slightly different trainers.  If I gave it a turn each time it would be super tight after a few rides.

As mentioned, yes, the tightness of the roller on the tire makes a huge difference.
Try to find a tightness that mimics approximately what you get on the road, then try to repeat that each time. You can either:
A) standardize how many spins on the tension wheel (easy and fast)
B) do spin down tests. Pedal to 20mph (or whatever) and stop, record how long it takes to get to a complete stop.

In any case, always make sure your tire is pumped the same and your drivetrain is clean. If you switch tires, your numbers may shift, but you can use the spin down test to get it back pretty close.

I Was only doing 1.5 turns on the wheel manual read 2.5. Huge difference.

Thanks for all the insight.

Cool!
I try to set mine up so that the big ring is suited to intervals and the small ring is WU/CD and recovery. That way, I can just flip that shifter and start the next set. Since you are trying for 'road feel', you may not be able to have that convenience.

Thanks for the recommended calibration methods. I've been inflating to 100psi and turning my dial know 3 full revolutions to set my kk trainer.

the Cyclops Mag only has a turn knob no quick release. the best you can do is mark the knob and try and do the same number of turn each time. also check the side knob that it is as close to the trainer as it will go. it will give you 3 setting so the farther it is away the easer it is.

This whole issue has got me disappointed. I really thought I was doing something for the first month. Now I get on the trainer and my mph and my cadence are lower.

I will have to get on it for the next month and see where I go.

I'm hoping trainer road will help.

How important is trying match road feel? I have mine set up according the directions, but the result is that for the same RPE and cadence, I'm in a much easier gear than I'd be outside (and consequently going slower according to the computer). I kind of figured it didn't matter as long as my setup was consistent ride to ride, but this is year 1 with the trainer and virtual power, and I'm not sure how to translate to the road come spring.

Yeah, on my mag trainer I'm in a way easier gear than I'd be on the road. I'm basically always on the small chainring on the trainer, whereas outside I'm virtually never on the small chainring. I find it's pretty obvious when the tension isn't enough cause I get some slippage when I try to accelerate too quickly.

My cyclops mag is pretty old, but also does not have a QR.
I spin the wheel and start tightening the knob until it touches the tire. The tire comes to a very quick stop. There is no ambiguity here. Then, I crank it down 1.25 turns. Super easy and repeatable enough for me.

I have a jet fluid pro, and I set it to the 'two clicks' of tightness... Much harder than riding on the road!

I also don't think I had the mag+ part set up correctly either. Just took that off and set it at level 5.

Glad to hear everyone else had a learning curve as well.

Dumb thing wore me out for an hour yesterday.

ChemNerd23, fluid or mag/wind KK?  If fluid with 6lb flywheel, set the tension so that it takes about 11.5-12 sec to coast down from 20mph when you first get on (i.e. cold), or 13.5-14 sec after a 10min warm-up period.  Based on previous post on BT, this is suppose to match the published KK speed resistance curve. For my KK fluid and ~105psi in a Conti trainer tire its works out to about 2.5 full turns.  It's been helpful doing this a few times; one was when I bumped the rear brake and it was rubbing the wheel, another was when the tension knob/bolt was starting to strip and it was loosing up on me (this was an issue with the older gray frame unit that they fixed on later versions with upgraded parts).  Whatever you use just be consistent with the setup and coast down check.

I read this post last week and went home thinking I don't have my Cyclops fluid adjusted right. Added a crank to the cam lever and it kicked my butt. Smell burnt rubber and tire was shedding onto the frame of the bike. Yesterday's 1.5hr ride sucked big time! Like was suggested I went to YouTube and found I had it about a crank too much. Looking forward to Tuesday's ride to see the difference.

What I do with my KK Road Machine is leave the knob where it is once it's set. I then deflate the tire every time I remove the bike. That way the drum stays in the same position the whole winter. This seems to give me the most consistent results. I inflate the tire to the same pressure each time, with the same pump etc.
