Hey everyone.

Started the whole cross training thing a year ago when I broke my ankle a little bit. From the pool to the purchase of an entry level bike for my first tri (Cultus lake Sprint) last year it has been a great introduction.

Signed up for the Victoria 70.3 this June and am enjoying the process. Well most of it, the hours infornt of the tv on the trainer isnt as much fun as i thought it would be (okay, it sucks a little bit) but it is getting done.

Looking forward to getting into the local lakes for some open water swimming but need to wait till it gets a bit warmer.

Great game, loving it.

Welcome!

It may get warm...sometime...

I hear you on the trainer, I used to have a trainer setup in my office watching movies but I just couldn't keep up the motivation.  Ironically I prefer getting into a cold pool in the winter...

Good luck and let us know if you have any questions on the HIM training.

Welcome David.  It should be an ok weekend for possibly getting an outdoor ride in this weekend.  I got out for the first time last weekend and it wasn't bad.  Are you following a training plan for your HIM?

Hi David and welcome to BT.  I peeked at your profile and it looks like you have a good running background to build on.

I was at Cultus last year as well (I did the Olympic distance).  I love the CL race but it was definitely a long swim.  By my time in the water I would say the swim was 950m for the sprint and 1900m for the Oly.  This year I'm doing the Oliver 1/54/10 on June 7th (by Outback events).

In June last year I ran the Victoria Oly race.  It was a great race and if you'd like to read my race report click on my name or profile pic and then click on profile and then find my recent race reports.  I liked the run around Elk and Beaver lakes.  Not quite flat but pretty good.  The Victoria race is early season so it is really important to get some open water swims in before the race and make sure you have time for a swim or two in Elk Lake as well.  Locally, we can get into Tuc el Nuit lake in Oliver about mid May.

I've got a two hour trainer ride tomorrow but I do it with a group of people which pushes me to work harder and makes the time go more quickly.  As popsracer suggests tomorrow may be a good day for an outdoor ride.  It helps a lot to have someone to train with.

For future reference check out Lake Stevens 70.3 for you in Abbotsford it is just south of you and a very nice race.

I lived in Abby for a year. Did what was then New Balance Half, now Victoria 70.3 as my A race. Try swimming in Langley in the 50m pool doing lots of 50s and 100s indoors and then Kits is a great OW simulation.

Welcome to the site!

I hear your pain on the trainer rides. I honestly become bored out of my mind after 30min. I don't know how peeps manage to ride on it for more than an hour. I think we are lucky and in for an early spring. I just moved to south surrey myself and looking for some nice training rides and run routes outdoors. I'm thinking of the 3 lakes series at cultus in June but a little worried about the cold water. Weather tomorrow is supposed to be nice. The hubby and I are planning to hit the pavement.

I look forward to following your training! Have a good race tomorrow I see you are running the first half?

Thanks for all the replys.

I do not have a complete training plan written in stone but I do have a training partner (Ronan) that knows what he is doing. So i kind of go over what we are going to do each week and then do my best to complte it. I have found that up to 7 hours of training is doable (per week) but getting closer to 10 hours is the current goal. Then of course increasing that some again.

I come from a Running Room background and run with the local club a couple of times per week if my schedule allows. As a shift worker sometimes getting the training in can be a challenge but finding someone to train with can really complicate things. So I do a fair bit of training solo.

I was scheduled for the "first half" (be my third year in a row) but an illness sidelined me. Felt better by Tuesday so registered for the Fort Langley Historic Half and enjoyed that run. So I am happy I did get a half in.

Ronan has scoped out some riding routes that may be closer to the hilly course so we will starat road riding soon. 0 ave here I come!

Hi David, another lower mainlander here.  0 ave is a great training route; I did a lot of my long rides from 176 st to out your way last year.  I haven't signed up yet, but hopefully will be doing Victoria as well.  Good luck with your training!
