Pre-race routine:

Packed my bag and bike the night before, except for my drinks. Slept really well, woke up at 5:15 before the alarm. Laid in bed till the alarm went off deciding if I was going to get up and go to the race or not. This has been the pattern for most of my mornings of late. Been really lacking motivation.

Finally decided that it have paid my entry fee I need to get up and go (besides if I didn't then I was going to have to mow he lawns). Sorted the dogs, had breakfast and left at 6am as planned.

I like it when I'm driving to races and the further I get the more cars there are with bikes loaded up. It makes me feel like I'm part of something.

Arrived and found parking fairly easily, parked at the church and strolled to transition. Went to packet pick up then got transition set up and body marking done. Then lined up for the loo.
Event warmup:

Nothing really, my wave started 45 minutes after the first wave so there was lots of hanging around waiting.
Swim
  • 17m 56s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

They set up an in water start because of the sandbank that stretches for the first 20-30m into the water. They then set the swim at 750m so there was about a 30m in water run before you got to the sand.

I got a bit mixed up in the washing machine at the start. I'm just not fast enough to get through the pack.

It was a bit choppy, and for the back straight we were swimming against a reasonable current. Along the back straight each time I sighted I copped a wave in the face.

Overall my swim was ok, but is just need to get faster.
What would you do differently?:

Train more and also focus more on my stroke while racing because it wasn't till probably the last 250m that I started thing about my catch and the improvements just aren't ingrained enough for it to be automatic yet.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Walked a reasonable amount of this my legs felt a bit like jello.
What would you do differently?:

Need to kick more for the last bit of the swim so that I don't get the jello thing.
Bike
  • 44m 47s
  • 20 kms
  • 26.80 km/hr
Comments:

Had a bit of a gusty head and cross wind for a good portion of the course, but it was pretty flat.

A couple of times I had to tell myself to get my head in the game cause I wasn't pushing it really at all. Started to get uncomfortable on at about the halfway mark but it was tolerable.

I was reasonably happy with this ride because I wanted to average over 20kph and I did that.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Also need to ride on the road more so that I can get comfortable with drinking on the bike. I didn't drink anything.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

This is a bit slow considering the bike in was right near my spot. But the lady next to me had put her bike in my place. I had to move it before I could rack my bike.

What would you do differently?:

Maybe put speed laces in my shoes.
Run
  • 36m 31s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 18s  min/km
Comments:

Started out doing a 4/1 run/walk. I was feeling good, I had upped the cadence on the bike for the last 100m and I never got jelly legs, which was good. After the first 1.5k I was still feeling good so I stopped walking and just kept running at a good steady pace for me. Managed to run the entire last 3.5k without walking which I was really really happy with.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some water and went and packed up as transition was open (and already half empty) cause I was one of the last runners in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of consistent training.

Event comments:

Races organised by Tri events are always well done with lots of great volunteers . They do a fantastic job.

Considering my inconsistent training I was pretty happy with my time, especially my run time.

Great race, Stacey. It was nice to read about a race somewhere where it's not 5* F outside. Congrats on the run...well done!

Great job on the bike and especially the run!  Mowing lawns vs. racing - yup, your choice was the best one!

Sounds like a great race! Especially considering how crazy your life has been as of late.  Great job on the run and for dealing with jello legs!

I know what you mean about the excitement of seeing more bikes as you get closer to the event.  I'm always watching that, plus checking out what kinds of bikes are on the cars.  We're such geeks, huh?

Super job on this race.  You chose the race over mowing (always a good thing ), caught yourself as your mind started to wander, and pushed yourself on the run to do more than you had planned.  Way to go, Stacey!!  Keep up the good work.  Can't wait to see how you progress with your swimming!

Great race Stacy! It's always a challenge to find that sweet spot of focusing and pushing hard enough but not too hard.
