1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: 10th Overall and Still Don't Place in AG?? Just a rant: but since my Triathlon career has started last summer, placing in my age group continues to elude me. It was automatic in running, but I just can't seem to get one. This morning I did a sprint and finished in 1:13 and 10th overall out of 168 and I still ended up 4th in my AG. Seriously, what the heck?!?! What's it going to take to get some bling? These finisher's medals are mocking me. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: 10th Overall and Still Don't Place in AG?? It happens, I've got a competitive M45-49 group around here and if everyone shows up, I'm off the podium. If it wasn't for me winning my AG at a sprint last year, I wouldn't have qualified for AG nationals. I did a 5K some years back, I was 30th out of over 1,000 runners but ended up 7th in AG. Geez. Keep pushing. Look at the results, find your weakness and work on that. |

1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: RE: 10th Overall and Still Don't Place in AG?? Yeah, I get it's kind of whiny but think about this; of the 9 who finished before me, 3 where the OA placers, one was a woman, so that leaves 5. So that means 3 of those 5 where in my age group, that's crappy luck. Oh, and it leaves only 2 others so that means I would have placed in every other age group. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: 10th Overall and Still Don't Place in AG?? I wouldn't worry too much about your placing. You could find a sprint race where 1:13 will be on the overall podium (depending on what the distance was in your race)......conversely, you couldn't crack the top 500 at AG Nationals with a 1:13. AG racing is about personal achievement.....unless you are on the REALLY pointy end, your place doesn't mean much to anyone but you. Even at the pointy end, in AG racing, it mostly means you will be entitled to spend more on your ambitions. Have fun with it. |

Regarding the distance, according to my watch it was a bit long, most notably in the bike which was close to a mile over. Nothing that could mean more than maybe two minutes (the swim was a touch short), so I still wouldn't be flirting with sub 1:10. The guys in front of me all had way nicer wheels than me...is that enough of an excuse? I can rationalize entitlement to spend money... Edited by 3mar 2015-03-01 3:42 PM |

Seriously, in my last local Oly in my area, 5th in my AG (not 5th overall) was a multi-KQ athlete. I bike pretty well and ran a 39 for the 10k and still wasn't even 8th AG. All depends on who shows up. |

Last year was my first year competing multiple events (i.e. sprint to duath/aquathlon etc.) All 4th and 5th places lol Did a competitve L.I. 5k towards years' end with my bro and best friend doing the 10k. They were up there together 2nd and 3rd taking photos as I stood there with another 4th place in my 5k. I'd hate to be in some of those events with you not placing AG, had to be some tougher one's than I was in because I know you swim like a fish |

I couldn't tell because they started the male sprint last, so there was a million people in the water (she counted the colored swim caps). Anyway, I dropped to like 14th on the bike then passed four people back on the run. So the bike still needs help. Swimming fast doesn't help as much as the guys who kill it on the bike. Speaking of New York, I used to run the NYRR races in Central Park all the time and you had zero chance of placing anything there. A guy I worked with was an All National cross country runner in college (and he was just a couple years out of school) and didn't come close to placing in his age group with a sub 16 5k. |

It isn't a track race. Look at your splits compared to the guys you are chasing, especially if it will be the same few every race. improve transition times. |

At this point there are likely far more people who have been involved with triathlon and no longer are then there are current triathletes. Burnout is huge. I've seen some damn athletes come and go because they had some local/regional success and thought that it would transfer to larger successes within the sport. It almost never does......and that realization leads to a pretty fast flameout in most cases. I'd like to see folks stay in the sport and help keep it growing. The accomplishment of participation is the bread and butter of continued growth. Edited by Left Brain 2015-03-01 9:35 PM |

Pro 5892 , New Hampshire | Subject: RE: 10th Overall and Still Don't Place in AG?? It's tough AG… It could also be that you had a tri team show up that kind of overloaded that AG with some seriously fast racers. I had a race three years ago where I got 7th overall… 1-3 was in my AG but got the overall, so roll down meant the next 3 in my AG was on the podium. I missed it by one spot. Yes, all the top 6 in front of my was in my AG. Luckily I'm now one AG up from that hornets nest! :-) |

I am in the same AG as you, and it is tough. I have been in the same situation, and it is worse in local 5ks. It makes me think that I should have run when I was younger because apparently everyone was slow, not just me. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 10th Overall and Still Don't Place in AG?? Hmmm....In running, they weren't slow. Seems to be a tri thing. I think they can't afford the bikes or are too into late night partying. I've been at it since the 9-10 AG and it always seems like I practically have to take the overall to win my AG. (Okay, maybe not if you run 10K as an 11 year old, but depends on where!) Now have aged up to 45-49 and it can still be tough sometimes--did one tri last year where I was 6th overall and ended up 3rd in AG. Admittedly, I was hurting from a minor injury and it wasn't my best race, but that was kinda depressing, esp. since I had to KILL myself on the bike to beat the winner of the 60-64 women on that leg! There are some TOUGH ladies out there. |
