Maybe I'm just a little worried for no good reason,

But I am three months out (roughly) from my HIM June 14, Ironman 70.3 Victoria. I am following along with the BT beginner HIM RPE training plan, but this last little bit I am feeling very hesitant if I will be in shape by then. I have missed a few workouts here and there but nothing major. This week was the first time I swam 2000m straight and 2 hours on the bike (trainer, still have lots of snow where I am).

All of those have felt fine, a little slow albeit. I have finished a HIM last year granted the finish time was pretty slow, I was too tired after the bike and had nothing for the run. So I am focusing on the bike a bit more and my diet trying to drop some more weight (currently 210lbs and 5-10)

Just wondering how many of you out there get doubt in the back of your mind, mid/beginning of the training program and how do you deal with it?

Thanks.

You'll have doubts from now until you cross that finish line. I strongly maintain that these endurance races are more mental than physical. These races are finished in the months leading up to the race, not on race day. Stick to your plan and you'll be just fine, I promise.

Colin is right - the race is 'won' months out during training...the race itself is just the formal event. I wouldn't get too stressed out, we all go through ups and downs during training. Getting into a funk is normal, getting out is what's important. It typically takes more mental resolve than physical strength in my experience - and that's what long-distance training and racing is all about. so long story short, never underestimate the mental/psychological side of training.

good luck! we look forward to hearing how your race goes!

Couldn't agree more. I think this is a good one to remember while training

Paula once told me "better to be 20% undertrained and healthy, than 1% overtrained and injured." I've used that advice for everything from 5k-IM and it's worked. Hoep this helps!

I think you'll be fine. Trust your plan and don't try to jump forward to "see if you can do it"

3 months is plenty of time for your HIM.

Your plan to lose some weight is a great goal, as every pound you get rid of will have an effect of MANY pounds off your hip, knees and ankles when you are running.

Hang in there !

Howdy,
Its perfectly normal having these feelings. If you're not doubtful in some way, you're not respecting the gravity of what you are doing. It's a long day, try and compartmentalize. Keep at it, stick with your plan and race your race. Sounds hokey, but similar advice got me through the same doubts last year before my first IM at Louisville. Dfl>dnf>DNS

I would say that this is a pretty good indication that your training is going well. Feeling fine and a bit slower is probably a good place to be for HIM training at this point. As others have said, the "doubts" are normal and part of the endurance experience. Even during a race it isn't uncommon to have "dark patches" where you doubt you can keep going. The trick is to recognize these and push through them. It almost always gets better. Good Luck!

Just giving an update for anyone who does care lol.

2 months out and feeling a lot better, still not 100% confident but don't think that will ever happen.

Thanks for encouragement

This feeling is normal. Follow and trust your plan and your training and come race day, you will be fine.

keep at it and as above - trust the plan! doubts are what make you get out and do the sessions that you really don't want to - but that you feel beeter for doing after.
