Can't wait to share this with my students--we're studying interactions in ecosystems (like predation, parasitism, symbiosis, etc.) right now and think I'll show the pic first and ask them what kind of interaction they think this is!

The photo made for a great discussion! Their guesses included mating (??), friendship, some kind of symbiosis ("Maybe the weasel gets rides and in return it does something for the bird"), a young weasel being playful, and predation. I really had a hard time convincing them it was't photoshopped--guess it's good I'm cultivating skepticism. Accidentally told them it was photographed in Costa Rica (had looked up some bird species there around the same time) so guessing one of them will call me on it on Monday,

The weasel is actually attacking the bird for food. That's what my ornithologist sister said at least.
