Subject: KQ age group on race day
Hi,

I will turn 50 in January 2017, and if I stand any chance of qualifying for Kona this may be the year to aim at!

Could anyone confirm when I would be considered as racing in 50-54 though? Do I have to wait until after my birthday, or would I race in my new age group from January 1st? It would be handy if I would be racing for AG in any qualifying race after Kona 2016, but I don't suppose it works like that?!

Thanks.

You will not be considered as 50-54 until Jan 2017. You could, however, qualify at a later IM race in 2016 when you are 49 and race in the 50-54 AG at Kona in 2017.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I couldn't actually find it on any website as to whether it was age on race day, or age in that calendar year. It does make a practical difference, though, in my choice of qualifying-attempt race. There must be a distinct advantage for me to wait until early 2017, rather than late 2016, though there are many other things at play other than just age-group?

It's even better when you don't turn 50 until late in the year. I'm 49 and turn 50 in November so it's age up to race 50-54 even though I'm 49 all race season. :-)

I have an October Birthday and will be turning 39 this year.  So... if I understand correctly next year (2016) I will be racing in the 40-44 age group all year.  So if I did an KQ qualifier race in let's say June of 2016 I would be registered in the 40-44 AG and if I finished in one of the top Slots could punch my ticket for Kona in the 40-44 AG even though I was 39 years old on the day I qualified.  Is that correct?

Also...are all the KQ events the Full Iron Distance, or do they have KQ slots at the 70.3 distance races?

Did you mean June of 2015? 2015 is your last year in 35-39.

You are considered 40 years old beginning January 1, 2016.

I am currently 38.  This year (2015) I will be in the 35-39 age group which traditionally requires a faster finish time on any given day or course than the 40-44 age group to finish in a top slot..  This year is not going to be a KQ year for me.  I am not even doing any Ironman brand races this year (Hits Marble Falls next months and probably Redman in September).  If I have a shot in 2016 at getting in a solid attempt at a KQ (which it looks like I may from a AG stand point and available time for training standpoint) then I am going to start to figure out the qualifying process and start planning 2016 races now.  :-)

Gotcha.  For 2016 you will be racing M40-44.  You turn 40 in October 2016 so you are considered 40 for all of 2016.

By and large average finish times between 35-39 and 40-44 is basically a wash.  Additionally, the M40-44 AG is almost always the largest AG and may possibly end up with more slots that M35-39.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
