Set Up Events
35F / 2C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 04m 3s
Overall Rank = 139/340
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 23/40
Pre-race routine:

Normal routine. Ate at 0500, started drive at 0600. Checked-in (very smooth) and set-up transition area. Changed in pool locker room, stayed warm until about 10 minutes before time to start.
Event warmup:

125m in dive tank after light stretching.
Swim
  • 06m 3s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Best I've ever felt on the swim. Passed a few people in first 200m, then stayed on the next guys toes till the finish. First time I've gotten out of the pool and didn't feel exhausted, training paid off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

No issues, it was very cold so I set full calf socks and under armor cold gear shirt outside of pool area. I normally ride no socks, but weather was too cold for that. Putting on the socks added a decent amount of time to T1, but was well worth it. I taped my shoes the night before to prevent the cold air from getting onto my feet, that was very noticeable.
What would you do differently?:

Have socks rolled down so they would be easier to put on, place towel with clothing to dry off a little.
Bike
  • 30m 44s
  • 9 miles
  • 17.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Not disappointed. This was my worst bike time in 3 years, but I was only able to ride outside twice this year. Spent a lot of time on the trainer, obviously need to push myself harder on the trainer, as it didn't translate to the course. Was hoping for a 21mph avg, missed it by a long shot.
What would you do differently?:

Suck it up and get outside on the bike more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

No issues here, probably a little slow getting out of shoes due to being numb from cold. There was a woman and little kid blocking my way into rack my bike and I about ran them over, I was not happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, everything went very smooth. Best T2 time for me for this race.
Run
  • 23m 8s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 38s  min/km
Comments:

For the first year the course was very clearly marked and the volunteers helping guide you were alert and paying attention.
What would you do differently?:

I focused on the swim and bike for my training leading up to the race. My time was about 2 minutes slower than I would have wanted, but given the fact I did very little run training, I'm happy with the results.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. Grab some pizza and pack up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cold got me on the bike. Run was simply a lack of training.

Event comments:

Good race for what it is. It is a very short race to start the season and get a gauge on where you stand for the start of the year. Seeing that the weather was going to go up 10 degrees between 0800 and 0900, I thought they could have pushed the start back by an hour to help alleviate the earlier starters from biking in near freezing temps.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
