HITS Triathlon Series
42F / 6C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 54m 5s
Overall Rank = 85/85
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Woke up bright and early, drove myself out, the sunrise was beautiful. Packed the car the night before, no stress at all.
Event warmup:

The water was cold but bearable and i did some breast and bobs to warm up after setting up in transition and checking my tire pressure. I was the only woman not in a wetsuit but some of the guys were brave (cheap) like me.
Swim
  • 28h 59m 60s
  • 750 meters
  • 3h 52m / 100 meters
Comments:

I have never seen the water on Highline Lake so choppy before. It was impossible to swim the crawl without swallowing water. Last time i was in the middle of the group and drafting, this time i lagged behind and was one of the last out of the water. But i was faster than my usual pace, so overall i was happy.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight. I did not meet any of my weight loss goals in training.
Transition 1
  • 05m 59s
Comments:

The distance from swim to transition was really far and i did not have my breathing under enough control to run it. I swam in my Vibrams, so there was no shoe transition to speak of. I stayed in my tri shorts and changed out of my singlet into a t-shirt.
What would you do differently?:

Less changing clothes.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 10s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 10.78 mile/hr
Comments:

I am very happy with this ride. I surpassed my goals as far as speed.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water (which would probably require me to slow down more). I was so focused on making up the time i felt i had lost on the swim that i didn't pace myself as well as i should have.
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

All i needed to was rack bike, take off helmet and gloves, and go. Once again, i didn't change shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Master jumping off the moving bike again. I did it all the time as a kid, now i'm too chicken.
Run
  • 1h 07m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 21m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

My run was horrible. I could not control my breathing during the run and was forced to walk most of the course. I would keep trying and be forced to stop after a minute in. I believe that i have Exercise-Induce Asthma but do not have an inhaler. I also have allergies that may have been a factor.
What would you do differently?:

Eat even more during the bike. I ate everything i brought, gels, bloks, but i think more nutrition would have helped.
Post race
Warm down:

I was a little upset that my bike had fallen over during my run. I was completely wiped out at the end and thankful for the food they had waiting for us. I know i stretched and got back into the water for a while but the most strenuous thing i did was pack up my gear and push my bike back to the car (it was pretty far). I made sure to eat lots of fruit, hydrate, and focus on breathing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The asthma/allergy attack. Not training sufficiently. Too much weight to meet my goals.

Event comments:

I believe that i would have performed better had they not changed the run course and that i might not have signed up had it been the planned course. The volunteers and competitors were friendly but this was a little too competitive a race for me at my stage of training. I need to lose more weight and improve my times quite a bit before i feel comfortable here.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
