1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: Losing Water Bottles When I bought my rear bottle cage (the one behind my seat...is that what it's called?) the guy at the store was trying to sell my on the carbon one even though it was the same weight of the plastic one. His selling point was that the plastic would expand over time and I could start losing bottles. I didn't buy it (figuratively or literally) and went with the plastic ones...and now, a couple months later, I'm losing bottles left and right. After the first one, I was super careful to make sure when I put them back, they are all the way in, and today during my long ride I was checking constantly, until I reached back there and one of the empty ones was gone. What the heck? Is it really the plastic vs carbon? Could it be the heat (it's starting to get pretty hot here, like mid 80's) but frankly, it only get's down to the low 70's in the winter anyway, and it just started happening. The bottle holders I have have a small elastic strap around them too, so you'd think they'd hold tight. And they do feel like they are really tight. Anyone have this issue? |

Champion 9407 Montague Gold Mines, Nova Scotia | Subject: RE: Losing Water Bottles Pretty much anyone who has ever used a behind the seat cage has lost at least one bottle (in some cases, probably closer to one per ride). Easy solution (if you need the behind the seat cage) is to get some skateboard griptape and put it around the bottle(s) you use behind the seat. Shane |

Member 622 Franklin, TN | Subject: RE: Losing Water Bottles I've had some success by attaching a rubber band to the holder and looping it over the top of the bottle. |

Subject: RE: Losing Water Bottles Loop a rubber band through itself around the top of the cage and then when you put the bottle in, put the end over the nozzle. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Losing Water Bottles Just to add to the other's suggestions: it may seem seem somewhat counterintuitive, but the more vertical you have your behind the seat cage mounted the higher the probability you will launch your bottle. The more horizontal you have it mounted, the more secure the bottle will be. As an added bonus it will in all likelihood test faster in this configuration as well. |

And some brands of bottles just like to launch more than others, even with fancy carbon cages like the XLab ones I've used for almost ten years. Those freebie Gatorade bottles from events are the worst. The Specialized name brand bottles never launch. |

Those things will not stay in. I'll need to do what you guys do and increase the clamping force or put tape or something on it for race days. I lost 2 bottles in IMWI on the train tracks and wasn't happy about that. |

That makes sense to me though, because when you hit a bump the force is up and down. I think I have mine as flat as it will let me, which isn't very horizontal. |

1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: RE: Losing Water Bottles I use the Polar insulated bottles. So I don't know if that makes a difference. I use the larger size (the exact volume escapes me at the moment) and the Profile Design double behind the seat bottle holder deal. I use the larger size (the exact volume escapes me at the moment) and the Profile Design double behind the seat bottle holder deal. The extra-tall ones? I've used those before without launching. They work well. I think my kids absconded with mine; I haven't seen them in a while. This photo is my P3's setup. An XLab Carbon Wing on the seatpost hole, with a pair of carbon fiber Profile Design bottles. A spare tire rubber banded between the cages, and a spare tube strapped to the side of the XLab (other side in this photo). This has been my setup since I got the bike in 2007. Recently I've used a horizontal on-the-stem bottle holder, so I don't use the downtube bottle carrier on race day.
