I ran yesterday in the Newport News (VA) One City Marathon. The first time for the event, and first marathon for me at Age 58. It was a small field (limited to 500), but an "official" (BQ) marathon. I was hoping to break 5, and so was pleased with a 4:44 time. Didn't make the top half (ended up 9/16 in AG), but I doubt most of the guys ahead of me had had heart surgery four years ago! Just goes to show that even old folks can still "participate" in the events, even if we aren't that fast. Weather and temps (49-55) were perfect. I was sore last night, but actually less so today (and especially now, about 32 hours after the finish).

John

Congrats...you're making 58 look great!  I'll be turning 45 in May--it's your kind of posts that remind me I can keep up this lifestyle as long as I want! Congrats on your marathon!

Congrats!  It's amazing what we can do if we put our minds and our effort into it.  Inspiring.  Great work.

Big congrats! Way to prove that neither surgery nor age makes one limited.

I had a bucket list of "must do's before I turn 60" but it was made up of things like "take a course in public speaking, weekend trip to NYC with my 3 grown sons, learn to kayak, etc." I needed more.

I signed up for Ironman Frankfurt, next year July - and I am very excited about it. I originally planned to run my first Marathon in the middle of September, but am not sure if this is wise.

Is one month enough time to recover from my first marathon to go and do my first olympic tri? My alternative options are to do the 1/2 marathon and then do the olympic.
