Subject: Myrtle Beach Golf Trip - Bike Ride
Hello all. I'm overbooked and need to do a 3 hour bike ride (HIM training) Saturday morning from 5-8am before my group's tee time. We're staying on the beach somewhere around 20th or 30th north. For any locals or folks with riding experience down there, would I be better off getting outside or should I just hop on the trainer and watch the sun come up?

I guess I'm inquiring mostly due to, (i) uncertainty as to the roads and condition, especially in the dark, (ii) don't know any established routes, and (iii) not sure how safe it would be to ride in that area pre-dawn by myself.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. This all assumes, of course, that I'll be able to make myself go to bed on Friday night!

I don't really know any of the roads down there; I did a sprint there 2 years ago and that's the extent of it.

I would take a trainer. Drunks may still be driving home at 5 am but I err on the side of caution.

Thanks. This is definitely on my mind. My group sometimes goes a bit overboard on this trip, and we're a pretty staid bunch overall.

I am in the market for a new road bike, at several local bike stores I will test ride several bikes. Other than basic fit and components, how should I compare them while doing a test ride?

I own both a road bike and a tri bike. I am wondering which bike I should be riding during off season training, or does it matter?

On the long bike rides of 80+ miles I get very strong pain in my toes. I slow down my pace and I might recover, but when I hit the next hill it is back. Could this be some kind of circulation issue?

Two years ago I weighed in at a hefty 280 lbs and was a mess. Now I'm a lean 180 lbs and train daily. What a difference healthy eating, exercise, and self discipline can make!

Generally I bike for 1.5-2 hours, and by time I'm on my way home I'm shaky. When I get home I usually have a headache and am nauseated. What should I eat before or during my workout to prevent this?

Riding Zen means nothing more than being keenly aware of your surroundings and in control of your emotional state at all times. It also means riding safe and riding smart.

Over this next month I will be learning more about my bike each time I take it out to ride. I want to take full advantage of what it has to offer.
