How many of you carry your own hydration on the run?  I generally prefer to carry my own using a fuel belt. I've recently purchased an endurance pack and I'm thinking of using that on the run.  Any reason why I shouldn't use it?  Just curious.

Depends on the distance, weather, and spacing between aid stations.  Over 10 miles and hot, I carry a hand bottle.  I've never liked the bouncing of a waist pack.

Are you talking about training or racing?

Sorry--racing--specifically the Ironman I'm doing in June.  I guess I didn't think to look at the course logistics--how far apart aid stations are.

I always carry a hand held for runs more than an hour.  I am used to it and switch the bottles out on my loops.  I usually do the same in a race and refill as needed because I am used to sipping rather than trying to gulp at aide stations.  usually aide stations are a mile apart at most IMs so its a personal choice.  If you are used to a fuel belt lots of people use them.

I have carried a throw-away bottle of hydration out of T2, and use that for the first 10K. After that I rely on course hydration.

Definitely look at that first. Ironman branded events tend to have lots of aid stations on the run.

I personally would not carry my own hydration.  The aid stations will be plentiful so unless you have a special formula that you must have or cannot tolerate what is being offered at the race I'd rely on the course.  You should be able to find out what will be available on the course.  Get some of it and see if you have any issues with it during your training.

I use a Nathan hydration pack for long runs in training and like it a lot.  It is also useful for carrying gel flasks and other small items but I would not want to wear it in a race.

The only races I've done it in are Silverman at 95 degrees (ice at every aid station meant cold water for the entirety of the course) and a offroad multistage trail run with aid stations every 2-3 miles or more

Ok so IM CDA is an out and back X2 and looks like aid stations every mile.  I think my hydration needs will be met! Probably the less I have to bother with the better.

I trained with a 5oz gel flask during IM training for my long runs. Depending on distance, would either fill it with water or water and up to 4 gels (for Half marathons & such).

For Ironman though, I opted not to use anything. With aid stations located every mile and containing water, gatorade, gels, and real food I didnt see the point of carrying extra weight. Also, I think temperature wise you will be ok waiting 7-12 minutes between aid stations to re-hydrate. I think for hotter temp races (Texas, Louisville, Kona, etc) I would want to have a hand held that I can re-fill between aid stations.

Live off the course and you will be fine.

On long runs, I've been taking 4-oz of Gatorade Endurance every 10-minutes, for a total of about 24-oz an hour. Should I boost my liquid consumption on the runs?

Well the day is finally here. I don't believe a single workout has gone by in these past 9 years where the idea of being at the start line of the Ironman Hawaii didn't creep into my head.

So far the taper is feeling good and I'm getting that itchy feeling to race. I know this will grow even stronger when I get to the island and see my friends and PBN Team members.

Definitely glad this weekend is out of the way as 145 miles of cycling and 27 miles of running in two days is a fair amount.
