Subject: Running without socks

I just started running again this spring and decided I was going to ditch the socks.  I ran the first time and got irritation.  I wouldn't call them full blown blisters but definitely red and irritated.  I waited until they went away, which took about 2-3 days and ran again.  Same thing and probably to the same extent.  I did this for week 1 and then my first run of week 2 I ran a mile farther.  I got little blisters, more than irritation but not the big puffy kind that you could pop and drain.  That was Monday, as of today feet are back to normal and I'm going for another run tonight.  My question is, how long until I can expect my feet to become accustomed to running without socks, or when should I start thinking about shoe issues?

I would think it would depend on too many factors to come up with an estimate. I have one pair of shoes I can easily run in without getting blisters without socks, but my primary training shoes I would not attempt it.

For me it depends on the shoe construction, for example are there any seams or stitching on the shoe where the hot spot is occurs.  Sometimes the same model & generation of shoe have slight differences in sizing.  Until recently I was recently running in KSwiss Blade Run Lights and didn't have issue with 2 pair but the 3rd was just not fitting me the same and was always getting hotspots/blisters on my right heel..

I'll start doing sockless running about a month before I do a race to get the feet accustomed to the shoe.  I'll use some bodyglide on the areas where I may get a hotspot. For races I'll put a this small bandage and hotspot over it.

If you're not blistering try some bodyglide or similar to reduce the friction.

Why is it so important to you to run without socks?  If you are skipping runs because of blisters from running sockless, the easiest solution is to wear socks.  If you are concerned about the time socks cost you in a tri transition, you shouldn't be.  It is well under 10sec.

What is a reasonable amount of time for calluses to develop so I no longer get blisters/hot spots?

I don't wear socks for sprint and olympic distance tris. I get a bit of irritation but nothing that bothers me during the race. Before my fist sock less race I did a test run or two, but for training or a longer race I would always wear socks. Maybe you should be asking if it's possible to get over the irritation & blistering rather than how long it will take. I would question the value of sufferings through training without socls.

I do not have a real answer to your question - others have given you some ideas.

Another suggestion is to run without socks until it begins to feel uncomfortable, Stop then, and put on a pair. Yes, it means you have to carry socks, but you gain the toughening of the feet that you seem to be after, and you can still continue training.

I see no benefit to losing valuable training time waiting for blisters to heal in order to gain a few seconds in transition...

It depends on the shoe for me.  Some shoes no problem, others I just can't do without getting blisters.  It's almost always on the upper heal for me.

Do you use baby powder or as others have said body glide?

X2

I do all my training in socks but do sprint and Olympic races without socks. I may have a bit of irritation after Olympic races but nothing that hangs around too long.

Are you just going sockless for running? I found the best way to get my feet prepped for running sockless was to never wear socks in any shoes.

I don't do the sock thing even up to a marathon, I wear zoots but know there are others out there that are "sock less" shoes out there. Also don't wear them on the bike either

I'm going to gut it out.  I ran last night with socks just to get a run in.  I don't hear a definitive answer so I'll keep running and build up the calluses.  It's uncomfortable but after a mile or two there are other parts that hurt more and I forget about my feet.

I didn’t used to like to run slow. You begin to recalibrate your needs and wants and if-only you could jog an easy two miles, three times per week. Running is a gift.
