I would like to share something I stumbled across a couple years ago.  I was so moved by this that I posted it on my blog.  This summarizes my feelings and the feelings of most triathletes I know and train with.

Just know that to athletes, you are an inspiration and more highly respected than you can imagine.

Pretty awesome post.

Very awesome post. I can't tell you how many times I've felt like that.

W O W !

Thank you all for your kind words. Still trying, but injuries have stopped me doing much but swimming, but at least I'm doing that. If only some of the locals were as encouraging as you!

I salute you!
It's hard to overcome the fears and anxiety, but it's also hard to get off the couch and train for a triathlon.
Do you have to train with that group? It does not sound motivating at all. Can you train by yourself? Put some music on, and keep going?
What kind of injuries are you experiencing? Do you have proper shoes? Did you talk to the specialis?
I had problems with my feet (huge pain after 30-40 minutes of running), I spent tons of $$ for socks, shoes, lotions, etc, until I finally seek doctor's help and the reason was: too much tension in calves, which I solved by doing very simple stretching every day for 2 minutes. So there may be a solution, and perhaps you already have one

Anyways, do not think of others' thoughts. There will always be someone who is faster, who has better bike, or cooler gadgets. At the end of the day - you completed triathlon! And you're officially triathlete

Keep us posted on your training and achievements!

Hi, thank you for the reply. No not training with a group, just by myself (although I will be starting with a swim group once a week this friday!). I unfortunately stepped back at the gym, ready to squat 160kg, and someone had left a weight plate behind me, and I tripped, rupturing 2 of my lumbar discs!! It thankfully is going to be fine but will take a bit of rehab until running feels like a good idea! I jumped back on a bike last night without too many problems, but a road bike crouch for me is not great just yet. But getting there every day (I think I am sounding like a big wimp at the moment).

Thanks again for your kind words and thoughts.

I have been in and around here for a bit, but never actually done a tri yet. There are a bunch of reasons, I hurt like hell when I run, I'm slow as hell on a bike, but mostly I'm ashamed of being the only fat guy out there.

Our local club has beginner tris, but since that's the main ones they run, it's almost all young fit people, basically the polar opposite of me! I did the bike leg of one of their tris once, and did so badly, and was so humiliated, I've never been back.

But I want to.

How do you all get over those feelings?
Scott, c'mon back over to the Tri-N-4 Weight Loss thread. We have missed you. And we are always supportive. Heck, every single one of us is/has been where you are. You can check out my planned 2016 season and tell me how crazy I am.

As for those elitist snobs in your local club, those wankers can go bugger themselves. You aren't out there to impress them, you are there for yourself and your own reasons. Me? I found training partners at my local Weight Watchers meeting and just by talking to other OSF folks at the gym. (Old, Slow, Fat) None of them are into triathlons; but I have found one who's into racewalking, two or three who are into swimming, and a whole freaking tribe who love the Expresso exercise bikes.
