Pro 4824 Houston | Subject: Race w/o USAT officials? I would like to hear some input on this. A local race director who has been putting on great races for several years will be creating his own 'pool of officials' to be at the races in lieu of having USAT officials at the races. I understand this is USAT legal. However, I do worry about biased and the safety of the racers. The plan is to have a group to pull from, they will be trained (though not sure who is training them and what rules) and paid, in addition for every 2 races they officiate they will get free entry to one race they are not officiating. This RD is a big part of the tri community in our city. I'm just not sure how I feel about this and was wondering if anybody else has had this happen in their area. I guess my concern would be race team affiliations and alliances therein. So if Bob is officiating a race and his buddy from his local club is drafting is he going to penalize his buddy? What if he does and his buddy disputes this penalty? He will find out his buddy turned him in and whether the penalty stands will be up to the RD who already has a great deal going on during and after the race. Then again, maybe everybody will be forthright and there will be no issues? Just kind of thinking aloud and seeing what others think. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Race w/o USAT officials? In the 80's we did almost all of our triathlon without USAT officials......and mostly without their affiliation since they were a fledgling organization then. They were great races, and lots of fun. Close to home there are two YMCA sprint triathlons, and at least 2 others that I know of that have gone off for at least 25 years with no USAT affiliation. They sell out every year and nobody complains. In fact, now that I think about it......I bet most local triathlons operate with no USAT officials on the course. |

Pro 4824 Houston | Subject: RE: Race w/o USAT officials? I hear ya. The kids races here don't have officials. However, we are talking big races with 1500ish participants. Not a small sprint with 300 locals. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Race w/o USAT officials? Yeah, I completely understand your concerns in a race with 1000+ entrants. That's a different animal. Edited by Left Brain 2015-03-24 9:47 PM |

New user 327 | Subject: RE: Race w/o USAT officials? Are USAT officials prohibited from officiating when they know someone in the race? I can't imagine that is the case. I'm sure they will be trained on the rules applicable to the triathlons they are officiating at. I also doubt that you will find very many officials who will be willing to give their friends extra leeway. Most of the time I think they will be stricter on their buddies to avoid the perception of favoritism. I think you're making a big deal about nothing. |

I am not making a big deal at all, let alone out of nothing. I have never heard of an RD having their own officials and simply wondered if anybody else was familiar with races like this. I can't imagine I am the only person asking these questions with regard to teams etc. This may work out just fine. I am hoping it does and was looking for somebody else who has had this go well in their own area. |

Regular 116 | Subject: RE: Race w/o USAT officials? On one hand, it may seem like the RD is just trying to save money. After stipends and hotel rooms, a couple of officials for a race that size can cost you some $$$. On the other hand, sometimes the pool of USAT officials is in an area shallow... and the RD may be able to do a BETTER job of providing good officiating by creating his own group. Tough, but not impossible. The next logical step I would take after recruiting all these guys is to get them USAT certified so as to dispel any notion of impropriety. |
