Hey Wisconsinites!

My husband and I will be visiting Chicago and Milwaukee in a couple weeks when our son graduates from Navy Basic Training.  I would like to get my long run (14 or 20 miles, depending) done on Saturday while he takes his mother to see her sister. I mapped out what I thought was a good route going south on the Milwaukee River trails then north along the Lake front.  My husband is originally from Milwaukee but hasn't been there in over 20 years but is unsure/skeptical of the neighborhoods along that route. I thold him I would check with the Milwaukee people on BT. What say you all?  Thoughts?

Plenty of good running along the lakefront both southbound and northbound.  Some people may say the Milwaukee river trails going northbound can get a little sketchy in some areas, but others will say they are just fine.  I guess if you want to feel 100% safe you can stay along the lakefront on Lakeshore/Lake Drive northbound forever to get in some great running.  It is a popular route for both cyclists and runners all year round.  Your only safety concern along that stretch may be getting hit by a wealthy lakefront owners Bentley while he/she carelessly pulls out of the driveway

Thank you for the feedback.  It looks like the lakefront is only a few miles long and I need to do 15, so I was hoping for some variety but if it would make my husband feel better...

From downtown Milwaukee, you can easily run 11 miles northbound on Lincoln Memorial/Lake Drive all the way to Brown Deer Road.  You will have a sidewalk, running path or lane (in the street) virtually the entire way.  That out and back gives you 22 miles of beautiful running!

Perfect thank you. I am looking forward to running along the lake.  We don't have those in NM

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
