Won't be there this year but I did it last year. One of the best races I have participated in. You are in for a treat. Good luck with your training.

I'll be at the 70.3, not full. Good luck and hope the temps are cooler this year.

Stupid question of the day. In the past, when doing a full IM have have changed shorts between the swim and the bike. The way transition is set up at Vineman, I have pretty much decided to keep my wet shorts on for the bike. Q: Put chamois cream on at the bike? Is this acceptable behavior?

Yes. I bring Vaseline with me to 70.3's and higher. It's cheap, thick (last long), and most importantly: it works for me. I always grab some and stuff it where the sun don't shine on T1. It's just the way things work in triathlons. Nudity isn't allowed though.

FYI, someone posted on ST that the water temp has been running higher than normal due to the drought -- less water turnover or something (depth is normal, from what I gather).  Anyway, over the weekend they were measuring 77 degrees.  It's supposed to be cooler this week so the 70.3 athletes may be in wetsuits but we may need to keep an eye on things.

I wonder how much the water temp normally drops overnight?

Oh well, it's not something that we can control...

Hi Janyne,

Thanks for the heads up on water temp... you had me scared for a minute, but it looks like we should be wetsuit legal:

I will be unabashedly reaching into my trisuit to slather chammy cream on in T1. Modesty (dignity?) is optional in triathlon.

I was nervous for a minute there too!

We just need it below about 25.5 C and we are good :-D

Water temperature seems to be holding at a max if 24C and the Accuweather/Weather.com seem to be more in agreement (high of mid 80s in Windsor on Saturday) than last week.

When is everyone getting into town?

My husband and I are traveling on Thursday.  We are staying in Guerneville.  I hope to get a very short swim in the river on Friday morning before heading to Windsor for packet pickup.  My bike went out via TriBike Transport and I'll pick up the bike then as well.

I'm coming up Thursday, not sure if my girlfriend is coming up with me or Friday. We're staying in a caboose(!) between Windsor and Guerneville. I'll probably try to get a quick on-course swim in Thursday afternoon (FYI I think Johnson's Beach is only open for swimming 10-6... worth checking).

hello!

i registered for the full vineman next year, (can't wait) I will be travelling from overseas and it seems rooms are getting booked already. I looked at these hotels in Windsor:

Hampton Inn & Suites
Hilton Sonoma Wine Country
Holiday in Express

For hilton i can get a discount but not worth it if its too far :-(

Could you please advise me on which is closest and will the less hassle during the event, lt would help me a great deal and I'd appreciate it.

Finally, should I book now or wait until the hotels are listed on the website? Usually Ironman gives a discount if booked through them

cheers!!

Case

The Flamingo in Santa Rosa was the official Hotel 2 years ago. Not sure about now. It was quite a ways away from Guernville and T2, but doable. I think I would look around for something cheaper and probably closer. It was nice to have a large pool and on site restaurant, but for the price and bed comfort it wasn't' anything great.

I stayed in Guerneville both times that I've done this race. That worked out well for race morning and my husband had a car to haul me back at the finish.  I think that there are shuttles from Windsor to Guerneville as well.

airbnb.com -- I stayed in a converted caboose(!) last year for cheap and it was great. I'd much rather have a quiet place and kitchen in the days before a race than be in a hotel. I'd suggest going east of the 101, towards Guernville... there's lots of nice stuff out there, but do book early.

I was not an official; I simply observed the race and the officials doing their thing. Here is what I saw:

This training plan is written to prepare you for your first Ironman. While just a beginner’s plan, the hours per week start at a significant 8 hours.

Pain shows us how strong we are. After last weekend I am convinced of this. After 151 training hours of swimming, biking, and running, I flew to Sonoma County, California for the race.
