Overall Rank = 7/11
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Very stressful pre-race. Didn't sleep much the night before, as my 1.5 year old was in the room with us, up several times. Woke up at 5 and quietly got ready, but had to wake up the whole house as 2 separate friends' cars were blocking me in. Then got lost on crazy mud roads, and got to the venue ~45 minutes before the start. Promptly got a flat tire, and scrambled to change it in time to set up transition. Ran down to the start line, forgot my swim cap, ran back, and then got back to the line with about 3 minutes to spare.
Event warmup:

Quick 100 m swim to test the waters.
Swim
  • 35m
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a rough swim. It was a pretty strong and small field, who left me behind soon after the first 200 meter. I was the only person without a wet-suit. I kept swimming off course, looking up and seeing nobody around, and getting demoralized. There was a kayak next to me the whole time, and I got the feeling he was expecting me to go under at any moment. Got stuck in a current on the far side and started to freak out for a bit, but eventually pulled it together. Was pretty unhappy for the whole swim.
What would you do differently?:

I can't do any open water training in Zimbabwe, so I was unprepared. Spend more time in open water before my next race!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I didn't have a watch for the swim, so I don't know what my time was. Overall it was a fine transition, and there was only one other bike there so it was not crowded at all.
Bike
  • 1h 36m
  • 40 kms
  • 25.00 km/hr
Comments:

I felt pretty good on the bike. The hill workouts I'd been doing definitely helped, and I caught a few of the guys from the swim during the bike portion. The downhills were lots of fun.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Easy enough transition. Made the last minute decision to put socks on and was glad I did.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 52m
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 12s  min/km
Comments:

I felt great on the run. Kept a steady pace for 3 laps and really started to pick it up on the last lap, blowing by the only guy who I had a chance to catch.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

3 beers.

Event comments:

Zim Tri does a great job.

From couch potato to a tri in 8 weeks. It was the most fun I've had in a long time. The race organizers had it down and there were no problems at all. This was the perfect first tri, in my opinion.

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.
