Extreme Veteran 959 Greenwood, South Carolina | Subject: First crash Well it finally happened. Had my first bike crash and it was in a race. Going into year six of racing and never crashed. Biked almost 4,000 miles last year training for my Ironman races and no issues but it happened during a race on Saturday. I would like to say I was flying around a curve or something exciting but it was just plain stupidity. Coming out of transition and early into bike course when it happened. I was adjusting my shirt I had over my Tri suit (a little cold that morning) and my bike drifted over into the gutter. My reaction was to pull back out of the gutter instead of staying straight and looking for a smooth spot to pull back on the road. The gutter was too deep and I crashed at 22 MPH. Again plain stupidity. Road rash down my left side, deep cut on my right calf. The chain was off and jammed. Got it fixed but noticed my gear changer on left side looking screwed up. Cable pulled out so I rode the 12 miles in the small sprocket. Finished the bike portion and my calf muscle with the deep cut locked up on me in transition. Had to stretch it out for a few minutes. Got up and started the run. Finished the race 20 minutes slower than the previous year in which I won my age group. I went to shower and got some great first aid from the staff. Came out and talked with family about the events. Out of my surprise, I came in third for my age group, yes, there were more than 3 people in my age group . It may have been one of best and worst races all at the same time. Didn't DNF and HTFU. Bike is back from the shop and I am recovering from my bumps and scrapes. Be careful out there people. Oakville | Subject: RE: First crash Man that sucks! It doesn't sound like you hit your head, so there is a bright side (but if you did, I'd replace your helmet ASAP). Be careful indeed. I'm going into my 4th year of racing and I've seen some pretty nasty crashes, but have been lucky so far. I hope that doesn't mean I'm due! |

Yeah, no broken bones so very lucky. Hope the luck remains with you Scott. |

Extreme Veteran 680 Acworth, GA | Subject: RE: First crash GoDawgs- you should join us off-road in the Xterra tri's. You get bonus points and time bonuses for crashes! Well at least it makes the races memorable. Seriously though, glad to see it was just some minor flesh wounds and you did HTFU and finished. Awesome. |

Awesome. I like watching the Xterra races on TV but doubt I would ever do one. Broken bones don't heel as fast for us old guys. Thanks |

Extreme Veteran 909 Westchester, NY | Subject: RE: First crash I had my first crash last summer. After 12 years of successful racing, riding and general ambassador to riding. It was into a decent into a curve. I was going about 30 mph .. Actually 31.3 so says my garmin. A teammate hit the brakes right in front of me. I started to swerve, but hit my brakes too.. Came right off. 10 days in the hospital. I'm still not back yet. Good for you to HTFU and get on with the race. |

Never expected my crash would be caused totally by myself. 10 days in the hospital sounds like some painful injuries. Hope you get back to 100%. |
