five grand trade in sounds good.  Add to that negotiating 10% off the price of a new one, low finance rate (if you need it) and a five year warranty and I'd take the new one.

If this is one of those places that offers $5,000 for any trade, not surprisingly they are a bit shady. 2 years ago I was looking for a new car and went to one of these places based off the ad and a call to ensure the deal was legit for the car I wanted. I show up and they won't honor the deal because the model I wanted wasn't supposed to be included. The deal is also only for cars on the lot, and after looking at these all of them have "upgrades", which load on the cost. There would be a pin stripe for $500, an iPhone cable for $50, special licenses plate holder for $40, etc. I knew the deal sounded to good to be true, but after the phone call I assumed it would be worth my effort to drive 30 minutes out there to check it out more. They ended up screwing me around for almost an hour before I could get everything out of them. Never been more pissed at a company before.

Haha. NOT what I was dealing with. I thought $4k-ish was fair...  I was basically trying to see if trade in value would be greatly affected by the lack of A/C.

They thought I was negotiating.. but I really needed to leave to go coach.

2.  If you still love the car, then invest in it.  It will nearly always be cheaper to fix the car you have.  But, cars have come a long way in the last 8 years.

I'd rather $300/mo that I know about... than $300 every other month, that I don't know about.  We rely on our vehicles so much in this society.  Adds way too much stress to our lives to always be spending our time fixing them.  time for a new vehicle if you can afford it.

That's sort of what I'm thinking.

I say fix it and get a new car. This way you have a nice car and a practical one.

So, here I am, exactly one month later, and i have done NOTHING!

Well, I bought a compressor from a junkyard and it's been in my trunk for two weeks.

I went to the Subaru dealership with every intention of buying a Forester last night, and I just couldn't justify spending $25k on something I "want". When I bought the Mazda, I didn't have a car, so it made it sort of a necessary purchase. (can you tell I'm from a relatively frugal family?)

I'm waiting to hear back about a possible new job where the cost of living is MUCH higher (and I'd only take that job if they compensated enough for that)

Plus, a friend pointed out that if I keep this car as long as I've kept the Mazda, it might be my last car before kids. Now I want something more fun.

Nice! New or used? Did you trade in the Mazda with the broken AC?

New! And yup - traded the Mazda - broken AC and all.

FYI: If you're trading in / selling, CarMax usually stops buying after 120k miles
