Pre-race routine:

Go for a long run the day prior in the heat with the Better Half. Come back and drink on the beach with the kids, family and friends for the afternoon and into the evening. Tell each other that we're definitely not going to run this race tomorrow (which we only knew about from the signs we saw for it during our longer run). Get up and run the race.

Cracked me up when Kim got out of bed at dawn, left the room as I just was waking up, immediately popped her head back in and said, "We're racing today!" She truly is the Better Half! Not to mention that she was FIRST WOMAN!!! WOOT!
Event warmup:

Half mile easy jog to loosen up the legs and sweat off a little of the previous evening's volatile compounds… Few sips of water and wait for them to ring the ship's bell for the start.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Longish run the day prior, not training consistently, almost no intensity in my training for over a month, kind of a big afternoon/night libation-wise with The Better Half on the beach the day prior. Mostly the usual, and almost nothing I'd change (except the training part)!

HR averaged 169 (max I've seen in recent years is 177 or so, and 165 is threshold on the run for me when fit), so it wasn't for lack of effort that my pace wasn't up to snuff!
Course: From the middle school, it went out to the point on the south end of the beach, along the beach (past our cottage) and then back, then up the hill to the school for the finish. Couple hills (climbing up to the point and school) were

I wrote this last summer but apparently never hit the "make public" button.  It was a fun one, for sure.

Better late than never.    Congrats to you and the Better Half for an awesome race despite the overindulging the night before.  Isn't that what the beach is for, after all?

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
