I live Chicago downtown (right next to the lake) and looking for some suggestions on roadie friendly routes. Lake shore trail gets a little too busy given the proximity to the city. I did a little bit of research and it seems everyone likes to ride in burbs here. Since my bike accident (close to being fatal), I am a little terrified of riding on streets with traffic.

Are there any paved trails around the city that would be cyclist friendly? I have a roof mounted bike rack and would be happy to drive out reasonable distance if needed. Previously, I lived in DC/VA area and that area has a lot of rail trails and was a mecca for endurance training. Love Chicago but missing the bike trails around DC.

Any suggestions?

If you go to the Cook County Forest Preserve District website they have trail route maps:

I believe Busse Woods has a good trail system:

I work for the DuPage County Forest Preserve District and we have great trails here too if you want to go past Cook County. If you're looking for a long trail, you can try the Illinois Prairie Path, or the Great Western Trail also. Our Forest Preserve District doesn't own or manage them, but they are long stretches so there's plenty of trail to ride on!

Good luck!
