Pre-race routine:

Overslept, was slow getting out of the house... had to break all kinds of laws to get to the race site on time. Barely got a half cup of coffee down the gullet before having to blow out the door. Thankfully, I did take time to take care of a few other "morning rituals" lest that run be a disaster.
Event warmup:

None... parked the car and walked over to the start. Had about 3 minutes to stare blankly about before I heard the call for 5 Milers to gather at the Start.

Comments:

My training has been horriffic so far this year, so I was pretty much racing on legacy fitness from last season.
The goal was really just to see what I could do and hopefully get my season kick-started.

At the gun, I got out front with the lead pack, but about 100 yards in I glanced at my watch to see our pace and saw that it said 5:15 and I decided that I better reel myself back in before I get caught up in running someone else's race and blow up. I felt that I should be able to hold a 7:15/mi pace, so I settled back to that until I found a set of heels moving about the same pace as me to sit on for the remainder of the race. I basically just focused on keeping that guy close, but not right on his heels. I doubted I'd be able to pass him as he seemed to be running strong and I was huffin' & puffin' hard the whole way. We were both passed by two people, but before the end we passed both of them back and with less than a half mile to go I was able to dig just a wee deeper and was able to pass the guy I'd been following and hold onto the pass. As it turns out, he was in the same AG and that pass got me 3rd instead of being on the outside of the podium looking in.

What started out as being a "let's see what I can do" race ended up being a podium and a PR by more than 2.5 minutes. Now, I'm just kicking myself over what could have been if I'd been training the way I should have been since the New Year.

C'est la vie, eh?
What would you do differently?:

Absolutely nothing. I raced the race I needed to be able to do yesterday.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. Stood around with some other Team RWB folks and cheered on the other finishers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me.

Great job  minus your 5:15 start lol but seriously, good on you for pulling back.

Whats up next for the season?

Thanks

Yeah, that was a fun couple of hundred yards, but I think I'd have been done and kaput if I tried to hold that for more than a half mile.

With the exception of a trail marathon "fun run" up in South Dakota, this season is all short races. Sprint & Oly tri's, 5k's, 10k's... the longest a 10-miler in two weeks. The only "serious" ones are AG Nats again.  I'm doing both Sprint & Oly this year, but I think I've already missed the boat on being optimally trained in time for them.

The marathon is the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon, and for as much as it will suck to try a full mary on way not enough training (I seem to be good at that, lol!), it will be a fun event that I'm really looking forward to.  A sight-seeing run in the Black Hills, basically.
