I've got my first race of the season on Sunday (Olympic Distance) and was wondering what people are eating the night before the race. I have to leave my house around 5AM to drive to the race and was planning on having a PB sandwich on some whole wheat bread and a banana on my drive. For my dinner I was thinking a bowl of whole wheat pasta with some chicken and eating it early so I have time to digest and get to bed early. Sound good?

doesn't sound scary.

The most important thing is to eat something easy on YOUR gut, eat a normal portion and don't sweat it too much.

I agree with Chris.  The most important things (IMHO) are to eat something balanced and that is easy on the tum-tum, as well as early enough to go to bed at the appropriate time.  I don't subscribe to the "carbo loading" mentality in that I'm not going to gorge myself on bread, pasta, and potatoes the night before.  Honestly for me, I wouldn't do anything different than I normally do for an Olympic race.  I may cut out anything spicy, but I'd do that before any long/hard workout anyhow.  Good Luck!!

I keep to my usual routine, but I do subscribe to added sodium the afternoon, evening prior to an event. I have since been more diligent and less crampy day of

Eat something you've had before that is relatively neutral on your stomach. Most people will eat some form of carbohydrates. I eat on the early side (I.e. 5pm) but that's because my typical dinner time is 7pm. You want to run to the finish line not the john! ??

I also try to eat as early in the evening as possible.  Nothing too heavy like a steak.  I tend to eat a small portion of pasta and some bread to fill me up.

I also try to hydrate well for a few days prior to a race.

Thanks everyone. 10 years ago I would have stuffed my face with pasta and bread. These days I'm going for lean and mean! I'll stick to what works and not overeat.

In our family, we have a pre-race dinner tradition that has worked **for us** for several years and across different race types (swim, bike, run, triathlon) and distances (50yd sprint to HIM).

Pancakes and fried eggs.  **droooool**

We don't overeat and typically limit the eggs to one or two.  I find that it fills me up enough to get to sleep easily, but that it's one of those meals that "moves through" nicely by race time.  Not a carb loading thing, just a low fiber (and certainly not light on carbs) and quality protein plate full of awesome.

YMMV, but it's become something we all look forward to - especially when someone ELSE in the family is racing the next day!

Everyone will suggest differect things, but make sure you do what works for YOU. My magic dinner is some Olive Garden the day before the race. If that's not available, I can pretty much do anything, but I make sure it's got some carbs and that it is portioned well, i.e. don't overeat. Some cardinal rules in general are to not try anything new and nothing Uber greasy, spicy, or heavy.

I just eat normal...which a lot of times isn't that good to begin with.

My best HIM I ate the seafood buffet at the hotel which included deep fried stuff and ice cream for dessert.  The main thing for me is that I can get decent sleep and I don't have an upset stomach.  I've also had a couple beers the night before a race, but don't overdo it to the point that I feel dehydrated the next morning.

Chicken parm or spaghetti and meatballs and bread. I make a nice light sauce using basically just fresh tomatoes but I've had these take out also the night before races with no issues. I don't stuff myself or restrict portions. I just eat until I'm full. Usually on the earlier side too.

What you eat prior to your workout will determine your energy levels during a workout. What you eat after a workout will determine how quickly you recover.

While carbo-loading sounds simple (just stuff yourself with pasta, right?), the truth is that many endurance athletes make food mistakes that hurt their performance.

What most athletes forget to realize is that all the training in the world will go down the toilet if the pacing or the nutrition plan isnt executed properly.
