Pre-race routine:

Up way too early. Eat & out the door. Petersburg is about 15 minutes from my house so not a huge drive--but there's limited parking in that town so we had to get there at the crack of stupid to find a parking spot.
I stretched some. Talked to one of the trainers from the gym and a couple of my friends.
Event warmup:

Gentle stretching. I have 13.1 miles of running to warm my body up.

Comments:

I started in the 2:30 pace group, wasn't sure I would hang with them. Was going to take all cues from my legs cause this build has been rough. Ever since the marathon in 2013 my legs have NOTHING--today was no exception. I knew the course was going to be hilly and banked oddly because I had run the battlefield enough times to know it is not a "fun" road in terms of it's ease. Once I got into the battlefield and turned onto the tour road I could hear the musket fire of the reenactment. Not a lot of it going o, but enough to get a taste of it. Most of the rest of that road was just up and down, turns and crazy banked roads.
Got out of the battlefield and turned onto some side roads then out to a main road. Great job on the road closures. Our side of the road was fully closed--they put traffic in both directions on the other side of the median. There were some irritated drivers, but none were ugly at least.
Somewhere around mile 9 both my achilles were screaming. I stopped to stretch them but could tell they had reached their maximum capacity. Kind of disappointing to have to walk it in--but the options were finish injury free or keep running and wind up back in PT.
Around mile 10 there was another reenactment going on from a Revolutionary War battle. I was greeted as I ran past that area by 4 men on horses. They offered me a ride--unfortunately they were headed the opposite direction from me or I may have considered it.
Keep walking as fast as I can--truthfully my pace didn't dramatically change from the run to the walk so it was definitely the right call. We had to pass the finish area and do another mile or so in another neighborhood before turning back to the finish. I was able to run the last 100 yards across the finish at least.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this is all my legs had in them and I had to work with what I had.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got my medal (coolest medal ever--based off a Civil War Medal of Honor) grabbed some water. Had some of the trainers from the gym use the stick and massage my calves/ achilles some. Food tent was empty when I got in line had to go to Wawa for post race food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cranky legs and wicked hills.

Event comments:

First time event--some bugs to work out of the system. Overall a good job. BUT placing portopotties on 2x4's on the cobblestones means that they are not well balanced and any outside motion is going to make them wobble. They didn't have the start banner up when we got there and it seemed like it was not placed right. The mile markers on the course were consistently about 100 yards after my Garmin buzzed for the mile. Running out of post race food was not good.

Performance: Average
Course: Starts off on cobblestones for the first couple hundred yards. Then it's off to climb the hills. Lots of hills. Up and down. No monsters--but the roads are banked at odd angles so there was very little level surface. One leg or the other would be off balance throughout most of the course. Mile 3 turn in to the Petersburg Battlefield. 4 miles of up and down with crazy bends and off balance running....Turns out on a fairly main road but all roads have traffic closures--great job to the organizers. Up and sown through Petersburg. Go past the start/ finish area for the last mile then run back in.

Congrats on the race!   While you had challenges, you managed your race well and got that great bling.

Too bad they were short on post-race food -- that's not a good thing!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Nice job! That looks like a really painful race, between the hills and the cobblestone start and the banked roads and having to run by the finish and all. You're right about the medal -- super cool!

You did GREAT. and I gotta say, walking that much and still being under 3 hours is awesome. I hate that they ran out of food. That is un-good.

Way to keep your head about everything and make good decisions. That is hard to do.

Great job on a tough course! Taking what you have on any given day and finishing uninjured is a good thing, smart day indeed for you. It sounds like a really cool course.

Congratulations!

Sorry your legs did not want to cooperate, but you made the right call not to injure yourself!  That race medal is awesome!  The lack of post-race food, not so awesome!!

Very, very cool medal and very interesting to time the race during re-enactments!  Too bad the horsemen were going the wrong way.   Smart move chosing to walk rather than injure yourself.  Nice job getting to the finish!

By the photo, you gave it all you had; no one canm do more. Except maybe negotiate with the equestrians to turn abound & give you a lift, in exchange for some of that post-race food!

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
