Subject: Former Fat Guy to Triathlete
I completed my first triathlon yesterday. It was a beginner race in every sense of the word. It was much shorter than even sprint distance. We swam 200 yards, biked 6 miles and ran 2 miles. My goal was to complete it under an hour and I did much better than that. I completed it in 51 minutes and 12 seconds. I was actually the first person to finish. A little background about me. Less than 1 year ago I weighed 410 lbs. I wasn't a fat kid. In fact I'm a former college soccer player. I was also an above average high school swimmer. Last Memorial Day weekend I decided I was done being fat. I started eating right and working out. I've lost a total of 175 lbs and now weigh in at 235 lbs. I'm 6'2" so I carry it pretty well but I wouldn't mind losing another 30 lbs or so. In the race I completed yesterday my swim was the best event. My PR in the 200 is 2:08 but that was back in high school. I hadn't really swam at all since then. Yesterday I swam it in about 2:30. Not great but I thought it was all right for my first race in more than 20 years. Consider my bike isn't a racing bike I thought I did okay on that leg. I have a Jamis hybrid and I averaged 3:46 a mile on a very flat course. I run the 2 miles in under 20 minutes which I was very happy about that because I was pretty tired by that point. I think this is going to be my new sport.

Congratulations!! First place in your first triathlon... wow.
More importantly, congrats on the weight loss and life-style change.

Enjoy the rest of the journey

Congratulations!

Excellent work matey - and inspiring since I'm 10 weeks from my first novice tri (400m, 17km, 3km). Not setting a time for myself; but just want to get to the end!

Cheers
Pete

I didn’t used to like to run slow. You begin to recalibrate your needs and wants and if-only you could jog an easy two miles, three times per week. Running is a gift.

He looked at us and flat out told us that he wouldn't accept any of us as his students at a technical diving level with the poor level of physical fitness we had.

Get inspired to race a triathlon even if your older.
