Pre-race routine:

Dropped my body fat from ~20% for this race last year to 17.5% today. Knew I was very likely to lower my 6 year old 5K PR (19:49), set at this race in 2009, only question was how close to 19 min. I could get. Strained my chronically bad left PT tendon on an easy run three nights ago, but it had mostly healed up for the race today.

Been running with a club for the first time in all my years of running (New Basin Blues)...a lot of trail runs with major climbing, so I felt like I had good power development in hand. Plus I just dropped my marathon PR by 4 minutes last month, so very prepared.
Event warmup:

Jogged 0.2 miles from car to test arch strain...no real issues. Did a bunch of striders before start.

Comments:

Seeded myself in 2nd tier of runners (top 15) at the start. Knew roughly what my fellow club members in front would run, so was able to gauge my pace a bit off of them. Another club member I knew was also over 50 y.o. was in front of me at the start and holding about my target pace, so I chased him the whole way...never could reel him in, though (he won the 55-59 AG ultimately).

Went past the mile 1 course marker at 6:06--right on 19 flat pace--but didn't hit mile 1 on my Garmin until 6:22. Usually it works the other way 'round, so I assume the marker was short. Negative split mile 2 (6:16), which never happens for me, and held on for a 6:24 mile 3.

Just after two miles, a guy crept past me who looked like he might be in my age group. I was determined not to let him get away. Stayed on him for the next mile and then, when we went into a deep tunnel under a roadway about 300m from the finish, he struggled on the steep ramp up out of it and I was able to blow by him with a strong climb. Held him off down the stretch and--sure enough--he was in my AG and I got 2nd to his 3rd. (AG winner was a 51 y.o. who went sub-18 and was 6th o/a...I had no chance against that.)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Dodged a bullet with the last minute arch strain, but it ended up not costing me any time. Big PR three weeks before my 55th birthday. (Although I had 3.07 miles for the course on my Garmin, other club members had 3.10 and 3.09 on theirs, so the PR looks legit.)
Post race
Warm down:

A little jogging, but mostly hung at the finish to greet club members finishing. All but one of the club participants (in the 5K and the 10K) got AG medals.

I ended up scoring for us in the team competition...we got 2nd, 4th, 10th, 12th (me) and 14th. Probably won the team competition, but that won't be announced until later.

I always medal at this race--whether I do 5K or 10K--and once again picked up my medal from venerable Olympic decathlete Rafer Johnson, who shows up to do the honors every year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

Event comments:

This is a fairly large fundraising 5K/10K in our neighborhood. Flat course that has now given me a second PR at 5K, along with my current 8K and 10K PRs.
