Subject: First 70.3, where?
Hello! I'm beginning to train for my first 70.3 in October. My options are Port Macquarie, Las Cabos, or Tempe. Which of these would be a good course, climate, and location for my first?

I'd choose Port Macquarie ten million times over the other two.  All things being equal which certainly they are not.

It's in Australia.

The other options are a suburb of a crappy southwestern U.S. city and a rocky Mexican wasteland that has good fishing, golf, and nightclubs.

Like I said... all things being equal.  Which isn't the case.  I see you're in FL.  A trip to Port Macquarie will probably cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $7,000, and that's assuming you go by yourself.  Flights to Australia are about $2,500 to $3,000 each and takes about 24 hours each way.

You can probably fly to Phoenix for a couple hundred bucks.  Maybe $500 to Cabo.

I have the fortune of free air travel, so that isn't a consideration for me. Still on the hunt for a great ironman to do abroad.

It would still be much more expensive to travel to Australia due to the probable length of stay (more hotel and food expenses).

Then there's the jet lag factor.  You'll spend 24 hours on the plane and have a 15 hour time zone difference that time of year.  That's going to mess with you on some level.  So you'd want to get there a few days early to acclimate to the time change... which adds to the cost of the trip.

Doing a race in Australia would be awesome.
