Kamloops Triathlon Club
16C / 61F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 10m 5s
Overall Rank = 5/45
Age Group = 20-29
Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

did a small running warm up and a stretch. I also had a gel 20 minutes before the start. I have never had one before and I did not like it.
Event warmup:

small running warm up
Swim
  • 11m 26s
  • 600 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

started off good but I didn't keep my stroke rate where I wanted it. as my stroke rate went up my speed went down. the first 300 meters was ok but the 2nd was to slow. I passed one person 10 yards into the swim but i only beat them by about 5 seconds by the end of the swim. I should have stuck behind them and drafted the whole way
What would you do differently?:

keep my stroke rate in check and try and keep my speed up in the 2nd half of the swim. used the draft better
Transition 1
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

I was 3 seconds slower then the fastest T1 and i put socks on. I could have been even faster. next race i'm going to try and race sockless
What would you do differently?:

sockless next race
Bike
  • 36m 56s
  • 20 kms
  • 32.49 km/hr
Comments:

there was about 30 seconds of running time before you could mount your bike but after T1
What would you do differently?:

get into my peddles better. and put out a bit harder on the bike
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

shoes were hard to put on I lost about 5 seconds there
What would you do differently?:

Have better shoes. I will for next race
Run
  • 20m 39s
  • 4.5 kms
  • 04m 35s  min/km
Comments:

the hill was right at the start. I was passing a lot of people from the races that started before me. I slowed down to much the first time going up the hill. on the way down i didn't get into a good stride till the 2nd time around. my last lap split was much faster then my first lap. I should spin up a bit more on the bike to get my legs going
What would you do differently?:

attack the first hill harder and bump my pace up sooner
Post race
Warm down:

lay on the ground

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training and lack of experience

Event comments:

I had a good time. The people that were in the race were great. all the staff and people helping out were great to. The only thing I think was missing was they didn't give out anything for age group top 3. they just did overall top 3. I don't think it would cost to much to get some ribbons? and it would make it a lot more fun at the end for more people. I know this was a smaller race but they did it in the other small race i was in and it was a lot of fun!

Nice job.

My first lap was the slowest in my race too, last lap was the fastest!!

I felt pretty cold at first though being soaking wet, and it wasn't super warm yet!!

I practiced going sockless and got new tri shoes for the bike in time for this race, MUCH better than the shoes I was using before!!

What's next? I am considering the Vernon sprint June 21

Maybe I'll see you there?

Oh, and at my race, they had medals for top in each age group, but not top 3. They announced them though.

Well done madprops.  You look to be strong in all three sports.  Keep it up and have fun.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
