Subject: naps after training?
Hey all!

So, as I train, I notice I'm exhausted!! Duh, who isn't? But I dunno if it's common or poor diet?

So today I ran for 70 minutes... 8+ miles. I had a healthy kale/yogurt/berries smoothie. I read to take in fuel right after workouts to replenish and keep energy up. But always after my hour+ sessions I'm DEAD. Like right now, I can barely keep awake. I almost always need an hour nap after the longer sessions. Is this just common?

Or am I still doing nutrition wrong? :/

Oh yeah,sorry... So would it be bad to rely on a caffeinated beverage to last through the day? :/

Embrace the nap, resistance is futile. I have learned that being consistent in my training has earned me higher level of fitness which makes the naps less frequently. I guess what I'm saying is take the naps now, let your body heal and make itself stronger so the naps are not as strong.

Also, big time napper. And I totally notice that the more I train, the more naps i need.

it seems ironic to me that between me, the wife, and three kids of nap-able age, I'm the only on who naps.

I switched to a heavier dose of morning workouts this year and need a daily nap. Only get them during work week since I have a "conference call" every day around two. Luckily my desk faces away from my office door.

I've been swearing by naps for over 20 years now. I try to get one almost every day. *Helps to not have children

This reminds me of the George Costanza (under desk) naps I used to squeeze in during my bodybuilding days. Hysterical

Swims seem to take the most out of me and have me looking for a nap. This is somewhat problematic as most of my swims are over my lunch hour during the week. I might have to build my own Costanza desk.

I don't nap. I find myself pretty energized after workouts. But I couldn't nap anyways due to being a mom. I find that when I'm working out hard I sleep like a baby at night though. kids bedtime at my house is 8:30 and I often have a hard time hanging on that long. I've been known to fall asleep in my sons bed while reading his bedtime story.

Huge fan of the nap. For me just 15-20 minutes makes a big difference in how I feel for the rest of the day. Even if I am really tired I seldom nap longer than 30 minutes. Any longer than that and I feel more tired, or maybe more in need of sleep as opposed to being refreshed.

An hour shouldn't completely knock you out, unless it's a tough workout.

Make sure you're well hydrated and fueled going into the workout, it'll make recovering from it a little easier Downing some easily digestible carbs about 45 minutes prior to your workout may help.

I go thru spells where I'm wide awake at 2am-ish. If I don't fall back to sleep by 2:30, I get up and do my workout (normal workout wake up is 0400). After the workout I'll get ready for work, eat breakfast and lay down for 30-60 minutes to snooze. That definitely has helped me get thru my 10-11 hr work day (along with Nuun Energy or Mio Energy).

Absolutely love to nap, but it's typically only on weekends.

This is a rhetorical question. So I will answer it anyway.

Duh! Of course!

Pros only do three things.

  • Train
  • Eat
  • Sleep

A Golden Rule, but, (Not directed to OP), many don't know how to listen or interpret what it's saying

I'm a post-workout napper too regardless of nutrition or hydration.  The one time I swam before work, I struggled stay awake all day.  However, when I do a long run first thing in the morning, I end up more energized than tired, mostly because it feels like I've already accomplished something early in the day.  By mid-afternoon, though, I definitely need a nap so I only do that on weekends.
