Subject: What's changed in the past 12 years?
Hi all,

37 year old family guy in the Inland Northwest here. It's been 12 years since I completed a triathlon. I used to be heavily involved in the old TNO forum back in the day but that appears to be pretty dead now. Triathlon was a life-changing sport for me (I lost 50 pounds) and changed my outlook on life for several years while I participated in several sprint, 1/2 IM, and one IM distance tri. Then as I got older and we had children and other projects took priority I fell away from it and somehow 12 years passed.

Now, I'm excited to be coming back to the sport and have signed up for a sprint early July to kick things off this summer. I've started working out a new training plan which is focused on base-building and cutting some of this extra weight I'm hauling around

Any important ground-shaking philosophical or technological changes that have occurred in the sport over the past decade that I should know about? For example, I noticed that compression socks have become all the rage, LOL.

-Russ

Russ - welcome back, to you, also! Good luck getting back into the swing of things. A word of wisdom from my personal trainer - "enjoy the journey, relish the outcome."

Welcome to the site.  The only thing that has changed is more 'stuff' to help you train to your peak performance

As I age, my philosophy is to embrace the unplanned days off, get a little more rest as I feel I come back stronger with less injury...and strength train.

I want to follow the Winter Maintenance-Run Focus program (8 weeks), but don't know when to start. I also want to do the Intermediate Sprint-12 week program before my first race.

The schedule consists of 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work too. The maximum volume is around 7 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.
