Subject: Smelly running shorts revisited
Hello everyone!

I vaguely remember reading a thread (maybe one I started years ago which I can't find) about smelly running shorts and what makes them smell like that after running. I have shorts made my Asics and New Balance. I had the Asics shorts for a while and always had a icky smell after 30 minute runs or longer. Then I purchased some NB shorts because they were on sale and noticed they didn't have that icky smell the first few uses but after about a month of use they started smelling icky like the Asics shorts! >.<

I'm pretty sure it has to do with my sweat interacting with the fabric of each short and possibly be a result from using Tide to wash them. Do any of you have this experience with smelly running shorts too? What can I do to minimize this effect?

Thanks,
Roland

I was just ranting about this. That's one of the worst thingsI encounter at these races with people and their compression gear. Just as growse in a boxing gym. Then there's that stenchy breeze in the air especially when in a pack of people in running events....ewwwwwwwww!
Those compression fabric blends WILL stink over time. I have efforted to avoid this and my only success has come with an immediate rinse once returning from activity, the into a bucket of appropriate temperature with a lot of Tide detergent. I let it soak for nearly 24 hrs before a thorough rinse and hang dry. This has prevented that odor build up in just about all my gear.

There are specialized detergents available that really help get the smell out, check your local specialty shop for runners if you have one. Also, try some OxyClean powder detergent - soak your sweaty garments in there as soon as possible.

Also - some materials just smell when sweaty, no matter what we do...I think it comes with the territory.

I've had good luck with the detergent in the Orange bottle my running store sells. Tide with fabreeze was OK, but had too much fragrance in it for me.

Try white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser of your washing machine. A great, natural way to eliminate odors.

This! I tried a bunch of things but nothing worked even remotely as well as white vinegar. It seems too easy but it works. I soak mine in a laundry sink with about a half cup vinegar mixed into some water before putting into the washer. I should try the fabric softener dispenser thing.

White vinegar is good for stanky shoes too. I fill up a bucket and submerge my shoes overnight. Good as new

I encounter the same problem.

I think it has something to do with the bacteria staying in the clothes, even after being washed. Apparently this is more of a problem if you only wash in cold water.

I've started to use a product call Canasten (I'm in Australia, not sure if it is international), which is an anti-bacterial. I think it works.

Also, I've read that you should NOT use fabric softener, as this traps the bacteria in and doesn't allow it to be washed properly.

I've heard vinegar works too (and is no doubt cheaper).

I'll try the vinegar, but I do note that some shirts "hold" the stank more than others. Assuming that they are used equally, has to be differences in the fabrics that matters.

I use vinegar in a cold water wash, it works great. Also avoid drying in a clothes dryer where ever possible. Oh and no fabric softener.

I read somewhere that to remove bad smell from shoes you can put them in the freezer overnight, as it kills the bacteria causing the smell. Tried this and it works, obviously put the shoes in a clean plastic bag before putting them in the freezer.
Might work for the clothes too, will try

Up date for you. Today when I washed my stuff I had run out of vinegar so I used a very small amount of eucalyptus oil in the fabric softener dispenser instead. My clothes smell FANTASTIC!

Vinegar works well, just be sure to rinse thoroughly!

I find the cheaper workout clothes tend to get stinky faster (C9 especially). I have a lot of higher end stuff that has 'anti-stink' built into them and they seem to stay odor free for much longer.

Best product I've found (and I'm a stinky person) is Sol U Mel made my Melaleuca. Uses Tea Tree Oil and is very gentle to all fabrics. I've used it for just about everything cleaning wise and the results are great!

My hot yoga towel and clothes were the worst, and this seemed to do the trick!

I thought of another thing that works too, from my own experience. You simply let your shoes/shorts/whatever accumulate more and more stink, and eventually the smell will completely go away. You may be thinking to yourself- "Hey, I must be doin something right because there's no more smell", but really what's going on is that your significant other has gone over the edge from the ever present funk and has started secretly spraying your shoes with chemical deodorizers when you're not around.

Oh man, that would be great! But dang, they smell so bad even I can't stand it. I have to rinse them off right away, hehehe.

I go straight into the shower in my shorts. They get scrubbed out, rinsed, and hung up right then. gear lasts forever, and no stank.
