Obviously many of us train with heart rate monitors, but is it worth the time in the first transition, to install your chest strap, heart rate monitor and use it for the rest of the race! Bike & Run? I don't wanna hear about the wrist based versions in this thread.

My first Tri of the season is in two days and I'm thinking about using it. I'd like to see and compare my heart data during the actual race vs the training data. the strap can be installed around your chest in a matter of a few seconds..

Thanks for any input

I've just started using HR data for my IM training, so my coach wants me to wear it ALL THE TIME. :-)

I use a Garmin 910xt for training and did an OLY race a couple weeks ago, using the GARMIN for the first time in a race situation.
I put the HR strap on that morning and left it on for the whole race. Didn't bother me at all.

I will say it did help me a great deal in the run, keeping me in the proper zone and showed me where I needed to back off, or step up. Worked well and I ended up on the Podium :-)!

Wore it every race. Any reason you can't wear it for the swim?

I didn't own one for my first race but I will use it for my second. I will wear it from swim to run

I find it very helpful racing, especially at longer distances (Oly and up). A sprint I'm going on the edge of redline more by feel, but beyond that distance (and even there at times - trying to avoid going anaerobic at the start of the bike for example) it helps me a lot with pacing.

As with others I put it on before putting on my trisuit or wetsuit and keep it on. Most modern ones are ok in the water for the swim, but you should ask the Google if yours also is.

If so, it's easy to strap it on early and not worry about it during T1.

Have fun at the race!
Matt

I use for Olys but not sprints.

I use the Garmin 910 XT also, and you can't get in the water with it. My race on Monday is a Sprint and is 750m in the pool, so I think I will use it and put it on at T1. My use is intended to look at the data afterwards rather than during the race, since it's a short distance.

I have a 910xt and I wear the strap for every race and for the entire race. Why can't you wear it for the swim?

The 910xt is a multi sport watch/gps - it does fine in the water. You won't get HR data in the water, but can collect distance readings just fine.
In training, I don't bother with the HR strap when swimming, but use it for distance and pace calculations.
For racing, I like to take care of anything extra before the race starts and keep my transitions quick and easy, so I put it on before.

Set it to Multisport mode and race away!

I wear it for the whole race, including the swim.

Much faster than trying to put it on in transition.

Yup I wear mine at every race. It depends whether or not I use the information though. For sprints, I don't care. I just look at the data later since I'm interested in the data. For everything else, I'm interested in it to make sure I'm not going out too hard or resting for too long on the flats.

Good to wear in every race, its good feedback for future training!

You can wear it during the swim. As others have said you wont get HR data in this swim.

ALTHOUGH, today I raced with the Wahoo Tickr for the first time and you do get HR data in the swim with it! It has an onboard memory so it wont transmit to the watch in the water, but post race you can download and see your HR info from the swim. Pretty neat stuff!

This was one of those questions I always meant to ask... Can you wear it during the swim? When I first started I would put it on in T1 along with my cycling jersey, I guess when next season rolls around I'll just put it on under my one race old tri suit!

I have wrapped over the battery hatch with electrical tape but other than that, no problem with a HRM strap in the water.
