So i'll admit it, a couple of years ago I took a pretty nasty spill on my bike and this has left me a little shy about training on the road. I have a trainer and a pretty decent paincave set up so I do a lot of training in my garage. I am also a regular at my gym's spin classes (yeah I know that it isn't the same). I get out on the road with a local rails-to-trails paved trail relatively close to my house, but haven't been there in 3 weeks or so. Anyways, went out for a ride today and was reminded that a trainer does not improve bike handling skills. I need to get out of the house more often.

How about joining a riding group? I train at the gym most days because it best fits my schedule. But I ride on the weekend now with a group that is a bit faster than I am. Working pretty hard I hang in well on the flats and small hills but get my backside handed to me on the real climbs. But I figure I can't get better by riding with people that I am faster than.

Like you I had a bad cycling experience. I was hit by a car and had two surgeries. I have been back in the saddle for just a year now after missing 13 months and you do get comfortable back on the road after a while. I really only think about it now on fast downhill's. I tend to be a bit more conservative than I used to be racing down a windy road.

But you know what you need to do. Besides, riding outside is 1000 times better than indoors. Embrace it.

We have a pretty active bike club here but they won't let me ride with them as I don't have a road bike and they won't allow aerobars. Thinking I'm gonna trade the aeros out for conventional drop bars this off season. I just don't race enough (or well enough) to have a dedicated tri bike.

Racing this weekend, I was again reminded of the need, and thankful, for bike handling skills. Multiple loops of the course put more people in a smaller area. I gained time going through a few of the swerves and curves that others slowed down to get through.
