Regular 1161 Hamilton, IL | Subject: Gateway Triathlon - 2015 Did anybody else race this past weekend? Sketchy start with concerns of bad weather, but it broke apart and we raced without any major storms! The bike was WINDY and depending on when you finished there were bits of brutal heat on the run. Swim was a little choppy and out further I was feeling a few swells (not ocean equivalent!) On a personal note, I took another 14 minutes off of last years time. I held back on the bike more than I should have and still destroyed last years bike split. I'd be interested to see how many people that beat me did so on a road bike like I was riding. Swim was a couple of minutes better, and more comfortable, but got a kick to the groin that made me dry heave around the 10 minute mark, that wasn't pleasant. Sighting issues with foggy goggles. I really need to address that for next year. I kept holding back my run pace because I thought I'd blow up before the end. I finished with wayyy too much energy and know I could have easily pushed the bike and the run harder. So close to AG placing! Wife was a beast again, Got 2nd overall (womens) in the Sprint distance. She really felt like the new Speed Concept helped on her bike (she was speedy) and also saved her for the run where she totally destroyed her last year's pace. Her swim was CRAZY slow and if she had swam even close to what she does in training, she'd have taken first. |

Expert 1694 Illinois | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - 2015 Some of us drove down from Springfield and wondered initially if we had made a wasted trip. That swim was very difficult. Wind on the bike was tough, but that seems to be the norm at this race. I was actually hoping the cloud cover would stick around for the run since it gets so hot up on the dam, but that was not to be. Congrats to both you and your wife!! It was a tough day of racing!!! |

Have you used a tri bike at this race in past years? I was going back and forth on whether or not to use the road bike and decided to use the tri bike. The road bike would have made the hills easier. |

Regular 1161 Hamilton, IL | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - 2015 Anne, this is my third year on this road bike and up until yesterday it was my only option! I think this course is probably better on a tri bike if you have the option. Those hills are tough, but really, they are short enough that tri bike would be the way to go. |

9 | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - 2015 I happened to be in the area so I dropped by to watch at least some of it. At that point I had not yet ever done a triathlon of any distance. My first impression was: My God, look how far apart those swim buoys are! Second impression: This looks like a ton of fun, I've got to do one of these. But in a pool. I ran the bike course for the sprint distance, which was a little bit too far in the heat. I had to walk part of the way back. It was funny, though--on the way out I saw most of the competitors coming back, and there was an almost perfect relationship between speed and how nice their bike was. I don't think this was so much because the better bikes were so much faster but because the faster competitors tend to take it more seriously and buy better bikes. I might sign up this year. I've done a couple of tris but I still haven't done an open-water swim. It might be a good one to christen my new wetsuit with. |
