Subject: RE: Can you forget how to ride a bike? "Muscle memory" (automaticity of movements due to strong neural connections ), not exactly "understanding" in a cognitive sense. It was interesting how the kid was able to unlearn conventional bike riding much more quickly, since those neural pathways aren't nearly as deeply engrained as in an adult.
I went through something like this with bilateral breathing--it took me FOREVER--as in over a year--to get it to feel natural, even with really good coaching. (I've been swimming since infancy, and probably doing freestyle since age 5 or 6. ) One of my friends, a much slower and less experienced swimmer, who's never shown any exceptional athletic skill, mastered it in a few weeks with the same coaching and drills. I've also seen lots of kids master it fairly quickly. It actually took an injury that kept me from breathing to my dominant side for a couple of months to really master breathing to the non-dominant side. But I don't recall any "unlearning" process--once the injury healed, I retained the ability to breathe to my dominant side, as well as the new skill of bilateral breathing.
