Sunny
Total Time = 48m 41s
Overall Rank = 5/250
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/17
Pre-race routine:

Drove over from home early...left at 4:15am. Usual breakfast etc...
Event warmup:

Did a warm up run then swam 5-10 minutes before swim start
Swim
  • 03m 54s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went off in the "elite" wave of about 12-15 racers. Hard to get a rhythm in such a short swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Pretty basic....no issues
Bike
  • 23m 16s
  • 10 miles
  • 25.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off around 245-250 watts into the wind. After the turnaround I felt good with the wind at my back and pushed pretty hard. Passed two of the guys that were in the first wave with me and gained ground on the two that were ahead of me coming into T2 right behind them. Strong bike split for me. Watts were approx 255 avg
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

Misjudged the turn for the bike in and still had one foot in a shoe...slowed me a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to bike in....was assuming it would be like years past.
Run
  • 19m 41s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Struggled on the way out with the wind....didn't feel like I was going anywhere. Was in third out of T2 and there was no way I would catch the top 2. Got passed by guy that ended up third with about a mile to go and another guy with about half a mile to go. Couldn't hang with him but kept up the pace to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Should have been another 5-10 sec/mile faster on the run. Wind hurt me on the way out and I wasn't able to make it up on the way back.
Post race
Warm down:

Cool down run

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really-pretty solid effort

Event comments:

Always a fun race. Good post race party. Was about two minutes faster this year than 2014.

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
