Today I went for a swim same place I normally go. My wife was in a kayak and on my way out she said I looked pretty good. I hit the half mile mark at 19 minutes, nothing great I'm not a good swimmer. On the return trip she said there were several times I was just stuck in one place, working hard and going nowhere. She said this happened 3 or 4 times today. My end time was 50 minutes where I'm normally 41, 42 minutes. Still not great but I have a left arm that that almost torn off when I got hit by a car a couple years ago. Any thoughts why I'm not moving? Trained my backside off all winter and done several open water this spring a mile or more. I did very little if any kicking and it was from the hips and didn't feel exhausted or overly tired when I finished. Probably due to lifting and resistance bands. Thanks.

Were you swimming somewhere that could have some current?  It doesn't take much to slow you to a crawl if you are going straight into it.

Also, the look of the water and the current movements can be deceiving-- it might have looked like you weren't moving even if you were.

What was the body of water you were in? Lake, river, ocean, bay, pond?

Also, if your swim training is not giving you the speed you expect, it might be very smart and very cost effective for you to get expert help from a competent (and it is very important that they are competent) swim technique instructor. The payoff for you could be huge, especially considering your past injury.

It is reservoir. I take the same route out of the cove area each time. There are some currents there but never been this bad before. Back to it Wednesday so I'll see what happens. Thanks.

Do any pool swimming? Are you still hitting your times toward the end of sessions? If you're doing all open water, you might be served going to a pool and see if you can replicate the issue.
