Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: Buffalo Springs 70.3 vs Marble Falls 70.3 I did Marble Falls this year and loved it. I am signed up for Buffalo Springs. Can those of you that have done both tell me the differences in the bike courses and the run courses? I'm wanting to make sure I'm including that in my training. |

Veteran 740 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Buffalo Springs 70.3 vs Marble Falls 70.3 Never done Marble Falls, but have bone BSLT a number of times. BSLT bike course is very odd because of the winds and the criss-crossing of the canyon. On top of the canyon, you typically have substantial winds....usually cross-winds but some head / tail winds. The web site description of the hills is accurate. They vary from 1/4-mile to over a mile in length. They're not steep, but they tend to chew people up and spit them out if they don't pay attention to the amount of power they're laying out. BSLT hills are typically the downhill followed by an uphill, so you don't get the recovery after the climb. Run is changing.....the old BSLT run took you out away from the lake, incolved some pretty major hills, and had a grueling stretch in the middle that was completely exposed to the sun....no shade anywhere. The new course looks like it'll have two hills instead of three and be less mentally taxing. Two other observations about BSLT. It can be hot as an oven, but it's typically windy and not very humid. The net effect is that you can sweat a ton and not be aware of it. My guess is that, on a per capita basis, the med tent at BSLT sees more people than almost any other race.......lots of people suffer some serious dehydration. The other thing is that the location and the reputation of the race tend to keep a lot of MOP and BOP participants from signing up. The field is smaller than most WTC HIM races. |

Regular 273 | Subject: RE: Buffalo Springs 70.3 vs Marble Falls 70.3 g_shotts pretty much nailed BSLT. As for training, I'd just say the heat is the biggest factor, so don't shy away from some heat acclimation in your training, and in particular testing out your planned nutrition. What works in 65-70 degree weather might not work at 90-95. The bike will be 50+ flat miles with wind, and 8 no-joke climbs. I was fine with a 39x25, but race at 140-142lbs. I've never done Marble Falls, so I can't compare. I'll be back at BSLT this year. |

Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Buffalo Springs 70.3 vs Marble Falls 70.3 Thanks guys. I'm on a 39x25, but race at 110-112 lbs. My road bike has a 34x25 though. I'm also from Austin, so we have some decent hills for practice. Weather has been so crazy in TX this year that it's hard to predict what will happen on race day. Wait for me at the finish line and wave. I'm in the old lady category ;-) |

You couldn't pay me enough to do Austin, even though I live there. |

1508 Cypress, Texas | Subject: RE: Buffalo Springs 70.3 vs Marble Falls 70.3 You can check out Josh's Blog. He did both in 2014. I love reading his race reports. He is very detailed and notes some of the difference that he experienced between these two specific races. 2014 Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs Race Report OCTOBER 17, 2014 HITS Marble Falls Half Distance Race Report, 1st overall, 4/26/14 MAY 13, 2014 I also did the HITS Marble Falls 70.3 this year. Yep, it is in the books and was a great event. It was the perfect race for my first Triathlon since I live and work in Marble Falls. I got a job transfer and will be moving to McAlester, Oklahoma in a week. I was debating between doing the Kerrville Olympic Triathlon, the TriRock Austin Olympic, or the OKC Redman 70.3 for my 2nd race. With my move It looks like Redman was meant to be. I am kind of interested in doing the HITS Grand Junction 70.3 next year. I worked there one summer as a college intern and loved the area but haven't been back since. I don't do Sunday races so I like how all the full and half distances are on Saturdays in the HITS series. If the Buffalo Springs wasn't on Sunday it would probably top of my list for a future race. Good luck, Edited by BlueBoy26 2015-06-01 1:49 PM |

Good luck, Can't go wrong with Redman. It is a great race! This year it is also the long course National Championship which is the qualifier for 2016 Worlds which will be held at Redman. |

Ya...I lived in Tulsa before work transferred me to Texas five years ago. When I was in Tulsa some of the guys in my running group talked about Redman and were wanting to go down to watch. Ironically, my first Marathon was the Andy Payne Marathon. It used to always be run the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend at Lake Hefner (I think it is done on Sundays now), so I have some vivid memories of suffering there once already. I got on the Reman website in February for information on the race and noticed that it was going to be the Long Course National Championship this fall. I was so new to Triathlon that I didn't even know what a national championship was but did some research and do now. So...if moving doesn't completely derail my training (it took me 6 months to find safe running trails, etc. when I moved from Tulsa to Marble Falls) then my goal is going to be to place top 25 in the 34-39 AG at Redman. If I don't make top 25 then I guess I will have to look elsewhere for a Fall 2016 Triathlon. :-) Edited by BlueBoy26 2015-06-03 1:22 PM |

1508 Cypress, Texas | Subject: RE: Buffalo Springs 70.3 vs Marble Falls 70.3 I may be wrong on the number, but remember reading that the home country gets extra representation at the World Championship so there will be more slots this year than there would be a year that is qualifying for a world championship held outside the USA. The truth is that if I am under 5 hours I will be happy even if I don't qualify to run the 2016 World Championship. |
