Subject: when to do Bricks
The triathlon I'm planning to do this summer is July 18 and it's a super sprint (200m / 8 miles / 2.1 miles). I'm going to miss about 2-3 full weeks of training between June 15 - July 5 b/c of a summer camp I will be at + a minor surgery I will need a week to recover from.

My question for BT is when should I schedule my Bricks. I'd like to get at least two, maybe three, before the race, just to remind myself of what it feels like.

I'm running 5 miles with a friend tomorrow, and could get the bike distance in before we run, especially since the weather looks real favorable (cool and cloudy).

Is this weekend too soon to start doing bricks, or is now as good a time as any?

Any advice is welcome - thank you!

I would once a week after you bike get up and run just a 1/2 to a mile so you get used to it. Once you get the feel for it its not to hard.

Generally you're going to do bricks because 1) you're time constrained and want to work out two different disciplines in one day or 2) you want to practice / get a feel for running off the bike. It sounds like your thinking more the second. If that's the case, you don't need to do a ton of it. Is it too early? Probably not. But prioritize the ride, then do a short / medium run after, What you don't want to do is suboptimize the ride and then do a subopimtal run after. A common workout for me is a long ride (50-60 in my case training for 70.3) followed by 15-30 min brick run. But the focus is on the ride.

I'd do it two or three times after a bike ride, just grab your shoes and go running for .5-1 mile just to feel the rubber leg and figure what you have to do to work through it.

I wouldn't make a habit of it, though.

Thank you for the feedback. It does make sense to tack on a run to the end of bike-focused workout, so that's what I'll do.

I swim with a guy that has qualified for Kona and usually podiums (AG - big events/overall-local events) and I asked him about bricks a few weeks ago. He said he rarely does them. He thinks if he does them often it will mess up his running mechanics.

I don't do bricks often, but when I do, I limit them to 15-20 minutes off the bike.

Agree with above, my run distance in a typical brick is no more than 1 mile. Just enough to get reacquainted with that "special" feeling of running after the bike. After a mile of distance, I'm pretty much sorted out.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
